Tagarelli's 36 Lead Hawks To 115-65 Rout of RMU

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's basketball team unleashed some of its early-season frustration with Robert Morris-Springfield serving as the soundboard as the Hawks won in a rout, 115-65, on Saturday (Nov. 21) night at Pepsi Arena.

Junior forward Joseph Tagarelli (Bayside, Wis./Waunakee/Kirkwood CC) dropped 36 points and collected 13 rebounds in the win. His point total is the most since Andre Muse scored 37 against Culver-Stockton on Nov. 24, 2007.

Tagarelli also tied a school record with 18 field goals made and his 13 boards were the most since Billy Baptist grabbed 13 on Feb. 27, 2009 against Rockhurst.

Quincy's 115 points were the most since a 127-point performance against Central Christian on Nov. 21, 2009.

The Hawks (1-3) dropped their first three games of the season and had been struggling on the defensive end of the floor. In the first four minutes of Saturday's game, they still were not crisp locking down defensively.

A 30-second timeout by head coach Marty Bell with the Hawks trailing 10-8 with 16 minutes left in the half put an end to the Eagles' run.

The Hawks out-scored the Eagles, 51-16, in the remainder of the half to take a 59-26 lead into the break.

Quincy was dynamic in transition, especially in the first half, scoring 24 points on the fastbreak, including high-flying dunks by senior wing Godson Eneogwe (Chicago, Ill./Maine West/Illinois Central) and junior forward Evan McGaughey (Carthage, Ill./Illini West). Eneogwe was especially flighty, throwing down a reverse jam off a lob from junior Herm Senor II (Springfield, Ill./Southeast) before rocking a windmill after getting in a passing lane.

The Hawks turned 18 RMU turnovers into 23 points in the first half alone. Quincy outscored the Eagles (0-3), 34-0, on the fastbreak in the game and scored 86 of its 115 points in the paint.

In the second half, the Hawks outcored the Eagles, 56-39, and continued their hot shooting. They finished 61.4 percent (51-for-83) from the field, while holding RMU-Springfield to 44.6 percent (25-for-56) shooting. QU forced 27 miscues from the visitors.

The Hawks had five players in double figures. Junior guard Von Washington (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Central/Western Michigan) finished with 18 points. McGaughey had 14 points while Eneogwe finished with 13 points, six boards and three assists. Sophomore guard Bobby Frasco (Mt. Prospect, Ill./Prospect/Buffalo) added 11 points off the bench.

Senor dished out nine assists, the most for a QU player since Courtney Belger had nine on Feb. 4, 2010. Senor also had seven points and four rebounds. As a team, the Hawks assisted on 33 of 51 made baskets.

The Hawks finished with 21 steals in the game as Eneogwe and senior Nate Des Jardins (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) had four each.

Brandel Griggs led the Eagles by scoring 24 of his 35 points in the second half. He shot 13-for-24 from the field.

The Hawks will now play host to Hannibal-LaGrange on Wednesday (Nov. 25) at 7:30 p.m. at Pepsi Arena.
