Lady Hawk Defense Shuts Down Bearcats

QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University women's basketball team traveled on the road for the first time this season and earned their third straight win thanks in large part to their defense. QU played Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Mo. on Wednesday night (Nov. 18). The Lady Hawks struggled offensively, but their defense more than made up for it holding NWMSU to 44 points in a 37% shooting effort.

The Lady Hawks (3-0) continued their hot shooting behind the arc with a 42% 3-point field goal percentage, but shot 34% from the field. QU was clutch when it mattered hitting 90% from the charity stripe.

Maggie Cunningham was involved early and often for the Lady Hawks. Cunningham scored 14 points, grabbed nine rebounds, and dished out five assists. The senior guard started the game with a drive to the lane for a layup and one.

The Lady Hawks went on a five-point run in the first quarter to jump out to a 13-5 lead heading into the first intermission.

It took two minutes and 15 seconds for the first basket of the second quarter by either team, but Sarah Schumacher broke the scoring drought with a layup to give the Lady Hawks a 10 point lead. The Lady Hawks went into the half leading 23-11.

The Bearcats (0-3) mounted a comeback in the third quarter scoring seven straight points, but the Lady Hawks ended the quarter on a five point run with a bucket from Kara Gerbus and a three from Megan Wienstroer. QU went into the final period leading 40-29.

The Bearcats closed the gap to 42-35, but Wienstroer hit another three to get the lead back to 10 points. 

The Lady Hawks hit 11-of-12 free throws in the final five minutes of play to close out the Bearcats for a 58-44 win. 

Maggie Cunningham led the team in scoring (14), rebounding (9), and assists (5). Anika Webster scored eight points with four rebounds and three assists. Megan Wienstroer led the Lady Hawks with eight points off the bench and two big threes. Carly Beebe finished with five points and four steals.

The Lady Hawks hit six threes and were 18-of-20 from the line. QU scored 25 points off of turnovers.

Northwest Missouri State was led by Tember Schechinger with 15 points. The Bearcats shot 60% from the free throw line and hit just one 3-pointer. NWMSU turned the ball over 19 times and were out-rebounded 36-30.

The Lady Hawks will host the 16th Annual QU Subway Tip-Off Classic at Pepsi Arena on Saturday (Nov. 21) starting at 3 p.m. QU will play MacMurray College at 5 p.m. The Lady Hawks have won the QU Subway Tip-Off Classic the past two seasons.
