Second Half Run Sends Peacocks Past Hawks

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's basketball team led for most of the first half on Wednesday (Nov. 18), but Upper Iowa used a 15-0 run to start the second half and left Pepsi Arena with a 93-81 win in nonconference action.

The Hawks (0-3), playing in their home opener, led by as many as eight points in the first half after hitting three straight baskets, the latter a 3-pointer by senior Nate Des Jardins (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) that gave the hosts a 20-12 lead.

Quincy still led by three, 26-23, after a two-handed slam by junior Scottie Bruxvoort (Mitchellville, Iowa/Prairie City Monroe) with 7:43 left in the first half.

Bruxvoort and junior Herm Senor II (Springfield, Ill./Southeast) knocked down back-to-back baskets to stretch the lead to six, 30-24.

QU would hold that lead until 1:39 remained in the half when Carson Parker hit a couple free throws. The Hawks went into the break, trailing by one, 45-44. QU shot 52.6 percent (20-for-38) from the field.

The Peacocks (3-3) then opened up the second half with a 15-0 burst, going 5-for-5 from the field in a stretch of three-plus minutes.

A 7-0 run by the Hawks offered some resistance as Des Jardins hit a layup off a quick feed from junior Evan McGaughey (Carthage, Ill./Illini West), who followed up with his own 3-pointer. Senior Thomas Jackson (Louisville, Ky./Cincinnati State) got to the bucket to cut it to 60-51 with 14:43 left, but UIU reeled off the next eight points to push the lead back to 17, 68-51.

The Hawks peeled the deficit back to eight, 77-69, with 5:42 to play on a 3-pointer by senior Jordan Wilson (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood Central). The Peacocks quickly worked the lead up to 14 to put the game away in the final minutes.

Upper Iowa shot 55.7 percent (34-for-61) from the field and hit 7-of-20 (35 percent) 3-pointers. The Peacocks also owned a 38-33 advantage on the glass. QU shot 47.3 percent (35-for-74) from the floor.

McGaughey finished with 14 points, eight rebounds, three assists and three blocks while Jackson matched his 14 points and added five assists. Senor, Des Jardins and Bruxvoort each had 10 points.

Luke Lenhart paced the Peacocks with 17 points and Parker added 16 points and a game-high nine rebounds.

The Hawks return to Pepsi Arena on Saturday (Nov. 21) at 7:30 p.m. when they play Robert Morris-Springfield.
