Cunningham's Eight Assists Help Lady Hawks Sink Lakers 62-60

QUINCY, Ill. - Quincy University women's basketball proved to be a well-rounded team today (Nov. 15) with a 62-60 win over Grand Valley State University in the Microtel GLVC/GLIAC Challenge. QU shot 39% from the field and hit only four threes, but locked down the offense of GVSU to the tune of 32% from the floor and 29% from three. Five Lady Hawks finished with double figure scoring and Kara Gerbus notched her first double-double of the season. Maggie Cunningham filled up the stat sheet with 13 points, five rebounds, and eight assists.

The Lakers (1-1) jumped out to an early 11-2 lead and took a 16-10 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Lady Hawks (2-0) came out of the intermission with four straight points by Anika Webster and a strong layup and one for Carly Beebe giving QU a 17-16 lead.

The Lakers answered with a three on the next possession, but Nikia Edom knocked down a triple to retake the lead. The two teams jockeyed back and forth with the lead and ended the half tied at 29-29.

Two minutes into the second half, Maggie Cunningham converted two free throws to take a 31-30 lead. Kara Gerbus scored the next six points for the Lady Hawks, but the Lakers stuck with QU and built a four point lead. Maggie Cunningham hit a layup with 15 seconds left in the third quarter and Rachel Ruzevich blocked a 3-point attempt to keep the deficit at two, 43-41, headed to the fourth quarter.

The first play for the Lady Hawks in the fourth saw Maggie Cunningham find Nikia Edom open for a three. Edom finished with 14 points. Edom hit another three assisted by Cunningham with just over six minutes to play to give the Lady Hawks the lead for good, 49-46.

With just over four minutes to play, Maggie Cunningham hit an 18-foot jumper while she was fouled on the arm. She hit the free throw to lift the Lady Hawks to a 54-48 lead.

With QU leading 60-53, the Lakers hit a jumper with 47 seconds left and got the ball back on a missed jumper. Brionna Barnett banked in a three from the left wing to pull within two points, 60-58.

Cunningham hit both free throws with 11 seconds to play, but QU fouled Barnett and she hit both for the Lakers with four seconds to play. GVSU fouled before the inbounds to send QU to the line. Erin Mennemeyer missed both, but Barnett's half court desperation heave did not go giving the Lady Hawks a 62-60 win.

Nikia Edom led the Lady Hawks with 14 points. Maggie Cunningham finished with 13 points, eight dimes, and five boards. Kara Gerbus, Anika Webster, and Erin Mennemeyer each had 10 points. Gerbus grabbed 10 rebounds for a double-double. Webster had nine boards. Carly Beebe also had five points for the Lady Hawks.

The Lady Hawks will travel to Maryville, Mo. to play Northwest Missouri State University on Wednesday (Nov. 18) at 6 p.m.
