Gerbus and Lady Hawks Rain Threes in Opener

QUINCY, Ill. - There was not a chance of rain in the forecast in Pepsi Arena, but the Quincy University women's basketball team brought the thunder draining 16 3-pointers while shooting 66% from beyond the arc. Kara Gerbus paced the QU attack with 23 points on six threes against Northern Michigan University. The Lady Hawks started the season and the Microtel GLVC/GLIAC Challenge with an 89-60 win over NMU Saturday (Nov. 15) night.

The Lady Hawks (1-0) had 15 players with minutes and 13 players that scored against the Wildcats (0-1). QU shot 58% from the field. The Lady Hawks dished out 24 assists on 11 turnovers. Maggie Cunningham led the way with eight assists.

The Wildcats hung with the Lady Hawks in the first quarter, but QU's 3-point threats were too muc to handle. QU converted on four threes in the first quarter connecting on two in the final two minutes to break a 13-13 tie and enter the first break up 19-13.

NMU scored the first two buckets in the second quarter to pull within one point, but Kara Gerbus hit a three to ignite a 13-2 run. The Lady Hawks used six threes in the second quarter and a six-point run at the end of the half to take a 49-28 lead at the end of two.

Gerbus had 12 points at the half. The senior started the third quarter with two threes and a jumper to give her 20 points. Gerbus went on to finish with 23 points in 16 minutes of play.

Nikia Edom reached double digits with 11 points going 4-for-4 from the field and 3-for-3 from three. Rachel Ruzevich scored nine points off the bench. Anika Webster, Megan Wienstroer, and Selina Barnes scored eight points a piece. Wienstroer and Webster led the way with five rebounds. QU grabbed 31 rebounds. The Lady Hawks had 10 steals. Ruzevich and Gerbus both had three steals.

The Lady Hawks scored 26 points off of turnovers and 10 fast break points. 

The Lady Hawks finish the Microtel GLVC/GLIAC Challenge against Grand Valley State University at 3 p.m. tomorrow (Nov. 15) in Pepsi Arena. GVSU defeated Truman State University 71-61 prior to QU's game in Pepsi Arena.
