Quincy and No. 6 Rockhurst Battle to Scoreless Tie

QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University men's soccer team and No. 6 Rockhurst University came into Sunday (Oct. 4) tied for the lead in the Great Lakes Valley Conference standings. After 110 minutes of play, QU and RU ended in a scoreless tie to remain locked for the GLVC lead. Rockhurst played 46 minutes with 10 players after a red card sent Matt Collier off at the goal line in the second half. Quincy was unable to capitalize on the advantage.

Rockhurst (6-1-2, 6-1-1 GLVC) played the game with their backup keeper, Quentin Coates, who started because Logan Felderman received a red card on Friday. Coates was only tested twice and made both saves.

Nate Griffin was strong in net for Quincy (7-2-1, 6-1-1 GLVC) with three saves in his third shutout of the season.

The best chances for both teams came in the second overtime period.

In the 105th minute, Kaleb Jackson took a shot to Nate Griffin's right and Griffin made a diving stop to keep the ball out of the net. The save resulted in a corner for Rockhurst. RU got a head on the corner that was again saved by Griffin.

Griffin started the offensive attack by getting the ball deep to Xhovani Dokaj with a long drop kick. Dokaj forced Rockhurst to foul him from 25 yards out in the 109th minute. The QU junior struck the free kick upper 90 at the far post, but Coates made a full extension save to knock the ball out for a corner. Dokaj sent the corner to the near post where Robbie Tays elevated and headed the ball just over the crossbar and time expired.

Quincy will travel to Springfield, Mo. to face Drury University next Friday (Oct. 9) at 7:30 p.m.
