Hawks Fall Late To Panthers, 3-2

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's soccer team fell a goal behind on three occasions on Friday (Oct. 9) night at Drury, but the Hawks could not overcome the last deficit as the Panthers saw out a 3-2 win in Springfield, Mo.

The Panthers (5-4-2, 5-2-2 GLVC) took their first lead of the game in the 29th minute as Charles Guelly got behind the QU back line and slotted his shot past sophomore keeper Nate Griffin (St. Louis, Mo./CBC).

The 1-0 lead would hold into halftime as Drury held a 6-4 edge in shots and a 3-2 advantage on corner kicks in the first half.

The Hawks (7-3-1, 6-2-1 GLVC) came out of the break and scored in the first five minutes as sophomore Jordan Stephens (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell) sent in a cross that deflected off the Drury keeper and inside the near post for his fourth goal of the season.

In the 65th minute, Drury took a 2-1 lead as Antonie Vial made nice run through the middle and laid off a pass from Ben Bruce, who scored from 12 yards out.

The Hawks tied it again in the 74th minute when junior Xhovani Dokaj (St. Louis, Mo./CBC) one-touched a pass to junior Taylor Reis (Quincy, Ill./QND), who was making a run through the middle. Reis clinically knocked it past the keeper at full speed for his team-leading sixth goal of the season.

Just five minutes later, the hosts would take the lead for good as Bruce made a 30-yard run down the left side and squared the ball to Guelly, whose shot deflected off a QU player and into the net.

The Hawks managed just one corner kick in the final minutes, but it did not yield a shot.

The Panthers out-shot the Hawks, 9-7, for the game, while QU held a 6-3 edge in corner kicks.

The Hawks return to the field on Sunday (Oct. 11) to take on Missouri S&T (6-5, 6-3 GLVC) in Rolla, Mo. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m.
