Hawks Out Pace UIS 2-1 and Move into Third Place

QUINCY, Ill. - The weekend could not have gone any better for the Quincy University men's soccer team. After a 4-1 win to McKendree University on Friday, QU followed with a 2-1 win over the University of Illinois Springfield on Sunday to move into third place in the Great Lakes Valley Conference standings with one game left in the regular season. The top four teams host the first weekend of the GLVC Championship Tournament.

It was senior day on Sunday as the Hawks (10-5-1, 9-4-1 GLVC) honored lone senior Ben Oliver before the game. Oliver got his seventh start of the season.

The Hawks were quick to take the lead against UIS (4-11-2, 2-10-2 GLVC). Artan Emini made a splendid run down the right side and slowed to cross the ball in the third minute. The ball sailed to the back post where Taylor Reis settled it and sent it home to the far post past the keeper for his ninth goal of the season.

The QU defense kept the Prairie Stars from a shot on Nate Griffin in the first half. UIS took one shot that was off target prior to halftime.

The Hawks added what proved to be a much needed insurance goal in the 50th minute. Pete Condol played a cross from the left to Artan Emini in the center of the box. Emini fired one off the keeper, but reached back with his right foot to clean up the rebound for his sixth goal of the season.

UIS looked like a new team in the second half. They found ways to put pressure on the Hawk defense and it paid off in the 58th minute. The Prairie Stars were fouled in the box and Alejandro Iuostroza converted the penalty kick to cut the Quincy lead in half.

Iuostroza almost tied the game in the 73rd minute, but Nate Griffin made a diving save to preserve the lead.

Nate Griffin finished with three saves in his 10th win of the season.

The Hawks travel to Kirksville, Mo. on Wednesday (Oct. 28) to play Truman State University at noon in the final GLVC regular season game of 2015.
