Hawks Strike Late to Win at Truman State

Kirksville, Mo. - With the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament looming, the Quincy University men's soccer team solidified a home game on Sunday at Legends Stadium in the GLVC First Round. QU overcame a wet playing surface and ended Truman State University's GLVC postseason aspirations with a 2-1 at Bulldogs Soccer Park.

Jordan Stephens lifted the Hawks (11-5-1, 10-4-1 GLVC) in the 85th minute when Taylor Reis flicked a pass ahead to Stephens who outpaced the defender and then beat the keeper from 20 yards out to put QU ahead 2-1.

TSU (8-10, 7-8 GLVC) scored the first goal of the game in the 18th minute when Nate Luebbert connected with Tyler Luebbert who slipped in a lead pass to Trevor Kaufmann to beat Nate Griffin to the low corner.

The Hawks scored in the 60th minute of the second half to tie the game at 1-1. Kyle Fraser crossed the ball into the box from the left side and it went off a Bulldog defender and into the net for an own goal.

Taylor Reis had a break away opportunity in the 65th minute that he chipped over the keeper, but a Bulldog defender came back to clear the line just before the ball went in the net.

In the 82nd minute, Nate Griffin made a huge stop on a 1v1 opportunity for Truman. Craig McLaurine tried to chip the ball over Griffin, but the QU keeper got a piece of the ball to send it just wide of the far post. Griffin made six saves to earn the win for the Hawks.

Truman had the edge in shots (10-9) and shots on goal (7-3).

The Hawks will host the GLVC Tournament First Round at Legends Stadium on Sunday (Nov. 1) with opponent and scheduled kick-off still to be announced.
