Hawks Return Home, Roll McKendree, 4-1

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's soccer team rallied from a pair of road losses last week to wipe out McKendree on Friday (Oct. 23) night at Legends Stadium, 4-1.

The Hawks (9-5-1, 8-4-1 GLVC) were left reeling after defeats against Bellarmine and Southern Indiana, but playing in their first home game since Oct. 4, they were in top form against the Bearcats.

"We had a good week of training. The intensity and quality was good throughout the week," said fourth-year head coach Mike Carpenter. "It was nice to come home too. We're probably a little spoiled with how we have this facility now and when you go places where the surface isn't as nice, we've struggled a little bit. Coming home tonight is part of why we played so well."

Quincy was in command from the outset, out-shooting McKendree (5-9, 5-8 GLVC), 10-3, in the first half.

QU broke through in the 22nd minute as sophomore Chris McArthur (St. Louis, Mo./CBC) played a splendid ball over-the-top through the middle for sophomore David Geerling (St. Louis, Mo./CBC/SLU). Geerling laced a perfect shot over the keeper to put the Hawks ahead 1-0. It was Geerling's fourth goal and McArthur's second assist.

While the Hawks continued to look dangerous in the attacking third, it looked as if they would take their 1-0 lead into halftime.

But as the clock wound down to the half, sophomore Jordan Stephens (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell) got behind the defense down the right wing, fended off a defender and played a short centering pass to junior Taylor Reis (Quincy, Ill./QND), who touched it in four seconds before halftime. Reis leads the Hawks with eight goals.

"At 1-0, you're winning, but you're also one mistake from being tied again," Carpenter said. "Maybe it takes a little air out of them. But the first 20 minutes of the second half they came right at us and scored. That's what we talked about at halftime. We tried to avoid that, but we didn't do a very good job of keeping the pressure on them."

The Bearcats cut the Hawks' lead in half in the 71st minute as Felipe Thompson headed in a David Cole cross at the back post.

The Hawks responded just two minutes later as Stephens drove a low cross through the box destined for sophomore Artan Emini (Yorkville, Ill.), who put it past the keeper into the left side of the net to put the hosts up 3-1. Stephens was credited with his second assist of the game and his fifth of the year.

"Once we conceded I thought our reaction was very good. After we scored the third, there was only one way it was going to go from there," Carpenter said.

Emini closed the scoring in the 78th minute as freshman Scott Prsha (St. Louis, Mo./Marquette) picked out the reigning GLVC Freshman of the Year making a weaving run. Emini touched the ball past the keeper off his line and slotted in his second goal of the game and fifth of the season.

The Hawks out-shot the Bearcats, 20-8, in the game and held a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.

The Hawks play their final regular season home game on Sunday (Oct. 25) at 2:30 p.m. against Illinois Springfield. QU will recognize the lone senior on the squad, Ben Oliver (Dromore, Northern Ireland/Banbridge), in a pregame ceremony.
