Hawks Tripped Up at Southern Indiana

QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University men's soccer ended their most recent road trip with a loss to the University of Southern Indiana on Sunday (Oct. 18). QU had a majority of the scoring chances in the first half, but Austin Bruder preserved the shutout, 2-0, for USI making four stops in net.

The Hawks (8-5-1, 7-4-1 GLVC) took three shots on goal in the first period of play and finished with 17 total shots in the contest. The Screaming Eagles (6-6-2, 4-6-2 GLVC) had a strong second half offensively putting four shots on net after halftime and converting on two of those opportunities.

Pete Condol made his sixth start of the season for the Hawks and wasted no time getting into the action on offense. In the 13th minute he put a header just wide of the net and in the 17th minute he had a shot from inside the box stopped by Austin Bruder.

In the 14th minute, Taylor Reis found an opening and fired at the net, but Druder was up to the task making the save.

With the first half winding down, Jordan Stephens used his speed to create separation and an opportunity on the left wing that was stopped by Bruder in the 43rd minute.

The Hawks opened the second half on the attack with Chris McArthur firing a shot that was saved by Bruder in the 48th minute.

In the 74th minute, Logan Ball took a shot that was blocked by the QU defense, but an unlucky bounce sent the ball back to Ball. Ball touched a pass to Pedro Castro in the center of the box who finished back to the near post for the goal.

The Screaming Eagles struck again in the 83rd minute of play when Trevor Skeith played a ball to the center of the box. Brian Fischer settled the cross and sent a pass to an open Riley Belding on the left side of the box who finished to the left post giving USI a two goal lead.

The Hawks sent two headers and two shots toward the USI net, but could not put any chance on goal in the final seven minutes of play.

Nate Griffin finished with two saves for the Hawks. Austin Bruder made four saves in his first clean sheet of the season.

The Hawks will play host to McKendree University on Friday (Oct. 23) at Legends Stadium. Kick-off at Jack Mackenzie Field is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
