Defense Propels Lady Hawks Past Prairie Stars

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - The Quincy University women's basketball team locked down the University of Illinois Springfield defensively on Thursday night (Jan. 8).  QU held UIS to 34.5% shooting from the floor, forcing 18 turnovers, and nabbing 10 steals in the 57-48 victory.  The Lady Hawks scored 21 points off of turnovers against the Prairie Stars.

The Prairie Stars (4-7, 0-3 GLVC) kept the game within two possessions until there were seven minutes left.  

The Lady Hawks (6-6, 1-3 GLVC) turned the tide when Carly Bettencourt hit two three-pointers with a Nia Roth three sandwiched between.  Bettencourt hit three of four from beyond the arc in the first half.  

Maggie Cunningham hit a jumper with a minute and 27 seconds left before the break to give the Lady Hawks an 11-point lead.

QU went into halftime leading 33-24.

The Lady Hawks had 15 points off of turnovers in the first half.  QU had eight assists and five turnovers in the first frame.  The Prairie Stars turned the ball over 12 times.

The Lady Hawks were up by 10 points with 18 minutes to play in the second half when the Prairie Stars launched a nine-point run lasting two minutes.  Tori Kuhn hit a pair of free throws and Carly Bettencourt hit her fourth three of the night to give the Lady Hawks some more breathing room.  

QU was not done as Erin Mennemeyer hit a layup and Nia Roth swished a three from the corner to complete a 10-point run for the Lady Hawks.

The Lady Hawks saw their largest lead of the game with four minutes left when Tori Kuhn hit a free throw to put them ahead by 14 points.  

QU would go on to hold off the Prairie Stars and win 57-48.  It was their first road win and first Great Lakes Valley Conference win of the season.

Carly Bettencourt led the way with 12 points and three assists for the Lady Hawks.  Maggie Cunningham and Nia Roth added 11 points each.  Cunningham also dished out three assists.  Tori Kuhn finished with six points and led the Lady Hawks with eight rebounds.  

Jessica Warren led the Prairie Stars with 10 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double.

The Lady Hawks will travel to Lebanon, Ill. to play McKendree University on Saturday (Jan. 10) in their next game.  Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. in the GLVC matchup.
