Edom's Career-High Lifts Lady Hawks over McKendree

LEBANON, Ill. – The Quincy University women's basketball team completed the weekend sweep against McKendree University on Saturday (Jan. 10) with a 63-47 win.  Nikia Edom led QU with a career-high 17 points.  The Lady Hawks defeated the University of Illinois Springfield 57-48 on the front end of the weekend sweep on Thursday (Jan. 8).
 
The Lady Hawks (7-6, 2-3 GLVC) found success early in the first half from three-point range.  Nikia Edom knocked down two treys early.  QU was able to get open looks on the outside by getting the ball to the post and dishing it back out.  Tori Kuhn scored six points in the first five minutes of play to help open up the outside shot.
 
The Bearcats (1-11, 0-4 GLVC) fell behind 21-10 with 11 minutes to play in the first half, but sparked an 11-1 run to pull within one point at 22-21 with six minutes and 16 seconds left.  Neither team would score again until Carly Bettencourt hit a three with one minute and 41 seconds left in the first half. 
 
Bettencourt hit another three at the buzzer to give the Lady Hawks a 30-23 lead headed into halftime. 
 
QU turned the ball over 12 times in the first half, but was able to limit that number to seven in the second half. 
 
The Lady Hawks went on a 9-2 run to start the second half giving QU a 39-25 lead.  The Lady Hawks would not relinquish their double-digit lead and finished the game with a 63-47 win.
 
The Lady Hawks shot 42.9% from the field in the game.  QU hit five three-pointers all in the first half.  Nikia Edom had three of them and finished with 17 points to tie a career-high set against Avila University (Nov. 14). 
 
Tori Kuhn scored 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds.  Kara Gerbus added nine points and eight boards.  The Lady Hawks out-rebounded the Bearcats 41-27 with 13 offensive rebounds. 
 
Carly Bettencourt finished with six points and eight rebounds off the bench.  Maggie Cunningham led the team with four assists and scored seven points.
 
The Bearcats shot 32.7% from the field and 12.5% from three in the game. 
 
The Lady Hawks will travel to St. Louis, Mo. in their next game on Thursday (Jan. 15) to play Maryville University.  Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at Maryville.
