Lady Hawks Bench Scores 42 in Win over Maryville

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Quincy University women's basketball team won their third Great Lakes Valley Conference road contest in a row on Thursday night (Jan. 15) against Maryville University in St. Louis.  QU held the lead for most of the game, but MU was able to stay close and gain the lead in the second half.  With the help of 42 points off the bench, the Lady Hawks regained the lead and defeated Maryville, 70-63.

Kara Gerbus and Lauren Gronewold provided early offense for the Lady Hawks (8-6, 3-3 GLVC) scoring nine points combined for QU in the first six minutes.  The Lady Hawks held an 11-6 lead over the Saints (8-6, 2-3 GLVC) at the first media timeout.

The Lady Hawks climbed to a 12-point lead with just over nine minutes left in the first half.  Kara Gerbus, Lauren Gronewold, and Anika Webster each scored seven points in the first half to help the Lady Hawks to a 37-31 first half lead.  Nikia Edom and Erin Mennemeyer chipped in five points a piece for QU.

The Saints scored the first eight points of the second half to take a 40-37 lead.  Cierra Young and Nikia Edom hit three-point field goals to regain the lead, and the Saints would never lead again.  The Lady Hawks sparked an eight-point run with Edom knocking down another three.  QU jumped out to a 52-43 lead.  

The Saints would not pull closer than six points from the Lady Hawks for the rest of the game.  

Erin Mennemeyer scored six points in a row finishing the game with 13 points and eight rebounds including five offensive boards.  QU finished with 15 offensive rebounds and 45 boards.  

Carly Bettencourt scored nine of her 13 points in the final five minutes hitting four free-throws to ice the game.  Bettencourt and Mennemeyer led the Lady Hawks with 13 points each.  Nikia Edom finished with 11 points for QU.  QU shot 40.3% from the field.

The Saints were led by Shelby Miller with 19 points.  MU shot 42.1% and scored 21 points off of turnovers, but handled just 31 rebounds.

The Lady Hawks welcome the University of Missouri-St. Louis to Pepsi Arena on Saturday (Jan. 17) in their next game at 1 p.m.
