Lady Hawks Hold Off UMSL For 80-73 Win

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's basketball team erased an early deficit and then fought off a run by Missouri-St. Louis to secure an 80-73 win at Pepsi Arena in GLVC West action on Saturday (Jan. 17) afternoon.

The win was Quincy's fourth straight and moved them past the Tritons into third place in the division. Junior guard Maggie Cunningham (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) also tied a school record with 15 made free throws in the game. She finished with a game-high 23 points – 18 coming in the second half – to go with seven assists and five rebounds.

The Tritons (7-7, 3-3 GLVC) scored the game's first five points before the Lady Hawks (9-6, 4-3 GLVC) responded with five straight of their own to tie the game. Back-to-back 3-pointers by the visitors gave them a four-point lead, but Quincy rallied for an 8-0 run and never trailed the rest of the way, though the Tritons stayed within arm's reach until the final buzzer.

The Lady Hawks shot very well in the first half, hitting 53.3 percent (16-for-30) from the field. They closed the half on a 7-2 run to take a 43-33 lead into halftime.

Quincy led by as many as 14 in the second half, but the Tritons would not go away. They cut the lead down to three, 64-61, on a put-back by Tierra Snow, who finished with a team-high 21 points and six offensive rebounds. Sophomore guard Nikia Edom (Romeoville, Ill./Murray State) made a layup with three minutes left, but Alexis Lawrence answered with a 3-pointer to make it 69-67.

Cunningham, who was able penetrate the UMSL defense most of the game, got a layup to push the lead back to four. Senior guard Carly Bettencourt (El Dorado Hills, Calif./Butler CC) sank two free throws to make it 73-67 and Cunningham split a pair on the next trip to increase the Lady Hawks' lead. Cunningham then hit all six free throws in the final 38 seconds to secure the win.

The QU bench outscored the Tritons' reserves, 33-6, led by junior center Erin Mennemeyer (Old Monroe, Mo./Troy Buchanan), who had 12 points, nine rebounds and a career-high six blocks. Bettencourt added nine points and three assists off the bench and redshirt-sophomore guard Cierra Young (St. Louis, Mo./Incarnate Word) added seven. Edom finished with 13 points and knocked down all three of her 3-point attempts.

The Lady Hawks shot 51.1 percent (23-for-45) from the field and hit 85.3 percent (29-for-34) from the stripe. The Tritons won the battle on the glass, 34-30, and collected 19 offensive boards, turning them into 20 second-chance points.

Quincy will look to extend its winning streak on Thursday (Jan. 22) when Rockhurst comes to Pepsi Arena for a 5:15 p.m. tip-off.
