Quincy Pushes Winning Streak to Five

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's basketball team won its fifth straight game on on Thursday (Jan. 22) with a 71-59 triumph over Rockhurst in Great Lakes Valley Conference action at Pepsi Arena.
 
The Lady Hawks (10-6, 5-3 GLVC) quickly took an 18-6 lead and never trailed after the first basket of the game by the visitors.
 
Leading 9-6, Quincy went on a 9-0 run capped by a 3-pointer from sophomore guard Nikia Edom (Romeoville, Ill./Murray State). The Lady Hawks forced Rockhurst (8-8, 2-6 GLVC) to go 0-for-5 from the field in that stretch.
 
QU led at halftime, 41-26, with incredibly balanced scoring. All 10 players who played in the first 20 minutes scored a basket as junior guard Carly Beebe (Vermont, Ill./South Fulton) led the way by scoring six of her team-high 11 points in the first half. Four other players scored five points before halftime.
 
In the second half, the game turned into a defensive struggle as Quincy held Rockhurst to 31.3 percent (10-for-32) shooting from the field, while QU managed just 30 percent (9-for-30) shooting.
 
The Lady Hawks were proficient from the 3-point line, knocking down 8-of-21 (38.1 percent) from long range in the game.
 
Beebe and freshman forward Anika Webster (Springfield, Ill.) led the Lady Hawks with 11 points. Webster added nine rebounds while Beebe dished out four assists and pulled down three boards.
 
Edom finished with nine points, five assists and four rebounds. Redshirt-sophomore guard Cierra Young (St. Louis, Mo./Incarnate Word) scored nine points and junior forward Kara Gerbus (Cincinnati, Ohio/Badin) had eight points, seven rebounds and two assists.
 
Jill Myers led Rockhurst with a game-high 13 points to go with five boards. Quincy out-rebounded Rockhurst, 49-40, and the bench outscored RU's reserves, 36-8.
 
The Lady Hawks will look for their sixth straight win on Saturday (Jan. 24) at 1 p.m. when they take on William Jewell (10-6, 5-3 GLVC). The Cardinals had their four-game winning streak snapped by Truman State on Thursday, 61-58.
