Rangers Steal Win from Quincy in Final Seconds

QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University women's basketball team led for 28 minutes and 46 seconds in the game against the University of Wisconsin-Parkside on Sunday (Jan. 4).  QU had a three-point lead with just 25 seconds remaining, but UW-Parkside converted on two layups to steal away a, 55-54, win from the Lady Hawks with just eight seconds remaining.

The Lady Hawks (5-6, 0-3 GLVC) opened the game with a 13-point run that lasted for six minutes and 11 seconds.  The Rangers (8-4, 1-2 GLVC) scored their first basket of the game at that point and sparked a 16-2 run that gave them the lead with seven minutes left before half.

Cierra Young knocked down two three-pointers late to give the Lady Hawks a five point lead.  Erin Mennemeyer converted a layup with three seconds left to send the Lady Hawks into halftime with a 32-25 lead.

QU had 18 rebounds in the first half and held the Rangers to 11 boards.  The Lady Hawks shot 46.4% from the field in the first stanza.  UW-Parkside shot 43.5%.

The Rangers opened up the second half with eight straight points to take a 33-32 lead.  The score would stay close for much of the second half.

The Lady Hawks put together an 11-point run to take an eight point lead with just under four minutes left.

The Rangers chipped away at the QU lead and pulled within three points after Kara Gerbus made two free-throws for the Lady Hawks with 25 seconds left.  After a Rangers timeout, Gaby Bronson got the ball on the right wing and drove in to score on a layup shrinking the lead to one point with 11 seconds remaining.  After some confusion on the inbound play, the Lady Hawks turned the ball over to the Rangers.  Stephanie Furr answered with another layup to give the Rangers a one point lead with eight seconds remaining.

Out of a QU timeout, Cierra Young shot a three that was blocked by Gaby Bronson.  The rebound fell to Kara Gerbus, but the horn went off before she could get off a shot.

The Rangers won the game 55-54.

The Rangers grabbed 22 rebounds in the second half including 10 offensive boards.  QU was limited to 15 rebounds.

The Rangers were led by Gaby Bronson with 12 points, five assists, and four rebounds.  Jessica Prince led UW-Parkside with seven rebounds.  Kristin Coniff scored 11 points and Tara Knapstein added 10 points from the bench all in the first half.

The Lady Hawks were led by Tori Kuhn with 14 points and eight rebounds.  Nikia Edom added 11 points, but only three in the second half.  Carly Bettencourt grabbed seven rebounds and led the team with four assists, but the Lady Hawks' leading scorer was kept off the scoreboard in the game.  Erin Mennemeyer added 11 points off the bench.  Cierra Young and Kara Gerbus both had eight points.
