Quincy Locks Down Miners for Seventh Straight Win

ROLLA, Mo. - The Quincy University women's basketball team extended their winning streak to seven games with a 68-52 win over Missouri S&T on Thursday, Jan. 29.  QU won their fourth straight game on the road in a game that was dominated by the Lady Hawk defense and their full-court press.  QU forced 28 turnovers in the game and grabbed 13 steals with Kara Gerbus, Maggie Cunningham, and Carly Beebe each recording three steals.  QU scored 30 points off of turnovers and 30 points in the paint.

The Lady Hawks (12-6, 7-3 GLVC) scored the first seven points of the game forcing two turnovers in the first two minutes of play.  S&T (4-14, 0-10 GLVC) responded with seven straight to tie the game up early.

Carly Beebe kept the Lady Hawks in the game with 11 points in the first half.  Maggie Cunningham drilled a three as time expired to break a tie and take a 25-22 lead into halftime.

The Lady Hawks shot 35.7% in the first half and 28.6% from three.  Maggie Cunningham and Carly Beebe were the only Lady Hawks to hit a three in the first half.  S&T out-rebounded QU 20-13 in the first period, but turned the ball over 16 times as QU recorded nine steals.

The Lady Hawks came out of the locker room and so did the offense to start the second half.  The Lady Hawks scored 16 points in the first five minutes after scoring just 25 points in the first half.  Two three-pointers by Carly Bettencourt just over four minutes into the second half propelled QU to a 13-point lead and helped to bury the Miners in the second half.

The QU lead fell under double-digits with six minutes to play when the Miners went on an eight-point run to trail by just seven points with five minutes and 50 seconds to play.  Carly Beebe responded with a hard drive to the basket that drew a foul.  Beebe hit both her free-throws to push the lead to nine points.

After a Miner jumper, Erin Mennemeyer would hit a layup and one with a strong move to her left.

Carly Beebe would hit another three late to score a season-high 17 points.

The Lady Hawks shot 50% in the second half to improve their field goal percentage to 43.1% in the game.

Anika Webster and Maggie Cunningham both scored 13 points.  Webster grabbed seven rebounds.  Erin Mennemeyer picked up her second double-double of the season and her career while coming off the bench for 26 minutes of play.  Mennemeyer dominated the paint with 11 points and 10 rebounds for QU.

The Lady Hawks will travel to Springfield, Mo. on Saturday, Jan. 31 to face No. 21 Drury University.  Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. against the Panthers.
