Quincy Scores Three in Second Half To Beat S&T

QUINCY, Ill. – Quincy University women's soccer coach Dave Musso knew the Lady Hawks would eventually be able to finish if they continued getting the chances they saw in the first half.

And after halftime, Quincy finished. The Lady Hawks scored three goals in the second half on its way to a 3-0 shutout over Missouri S&T in Great Lakes Valley Conference action on Friday (Sept. 26) night at Legends Stadium.

The Lady Hawks (5-3, 4-1 GLVC) just missed on several opportunities in the first half but just could not find the finishing touch in the final third, out-shooting the Miners, 5-3, in the opening stanza.

Quincy garnered much of the possession in the second half and opened the scoring in the 51st minute. Junior defender Taylor Lindwedel (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx Hall) sent a long through-ball that found senior forward Kayla Nurnberger (Washington, Mo.), who turned and fired a strike into the upper, right corner of the goal for her first goal of the season.

The Lady Hawks withstood some pressure from the Miners (2-5, 2-3 GLVC) after the goal, but freshman Megan Swanson (St. Charles, Mo./St. Dominic) was up to the task, coming up with four saves in the second half.

Quincy got some breathing room in the 74th minute as Lindwedel sent in a long cross from the right side to freshman forward Mackenzie Rief (St. Louis, Mo./St. Dominic), who lost her mark and deposited the finish at the back post. It was Rief's second goal of the season and Lindwedel was credited with her first two assists of the season.

Less than a minute later, junior midfielder Haylye Markway (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx Hall) earned a penalty kick and converted from the spot to put the game away. It was Markway's team-leading third goal of the year.

The win was a nice rebound off a tough 1-0 defeat at McKendree last Sunday (Sept. 21) and keeps the Lady Hawks in a tie for second in the GLVC with three other schools. UW-Parkside is the pacesetter at 4-0-1 in conference play.

The Lady Hawks will look to ride their momentum on Sunday (Sept. 28) when they take on Drury (4-1-2, 2-1-2 GLVC), which is coming off a 2-0 loss to Truman State on Friday. Sunday's kickoff is set for noon at Legends Stadium.
