Hawks Take On Illinois In Champaign

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's basketball team had an opportunity to play under the bright Division I lights on Friday (Nov. 7) night, playing at the State Farm Center in Champaign to take on Illinois.

The Hawks were able to do some positive things in their final preseason exhibition, falling to the Fighting Illini, 91-62, in front of 14,422 fans.

Quincy held its own on the glass against the Big Ten school as Illinois had a 38-37 edge in rebounds.

Junior wing Godson Eneogwe (Chicago, Ill./Maine West/Illinois Central College) led the Hawks with a double-double, going for 14 points and 10 assists while adding two steals and a block.

The Hawks scored the first points of the game as junior guard Thomas Jackson (Louisville, Ky./Jeffersontown/Cincinnati State) converted a three-point play on Quincy's first possession. The Illini, though, went on a long run by scoring the next 17 points over a seven-minute stretch.

Quincy trailed, 37-20, at halftime, closing the half on a 4-0 run with baskets by senior center Josh Schaben (Defiance, Iowa/Harlan/Iowa Lakes CC) and Eneogwe.

The Hawks had the lead trimmed down to as little as 14 points several times in the second half, including after a dunk by redshirt-sophomore forward Evan McGaughey (Carthage, Ill./Illini West) with 6:25 to play. The Illini closed the game on a big run to make the final margin.

The Hawks shot 37.5 percent (24-for-64) from the field and 5-for-17 (29.4 percent) from 3-point range. Meanwhile, the Illini connected on 47.1 percent (32-for-68) from the field. Illinois was led by 20 points from Malcolm Hill. Nnanna Egwu had seven points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

Jackson finished with nine points and a team-high three assists and junior guard Nate Des Jardins (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) hit two 3-pointers to finish with seven points. Junior forward Dalton Hoover (Pittsfield, Ill.) had seven points and five rebounds.

The Hawks will open the regular season on Nov. 15 in the Microtel GLVC/GLIAC Challenge at Pepsi Arena. Tip-off is set for 2:15 p.m. against Ferris State.
