Three Times The Fun: Hawks Win Opener in Triple OT

QUINCY, Ill. – If every Quincy University men's basketball game is going to be like Saturday's (Nov. 15) season opener, fans better strap in for some wild rides at Pepsi Arena.

Quincy overcame a 15-point lead in the second half and then the teams played on and on until the Hawks emerged as 109-107 victors in triple overtime. It was QU's longest game since it went triple OT against Saint Joseph's in the NCAA Tournament in 2010.

With three minutes left in the third overtime, the Hawks trailed, 106-101, before senior guard Ja'mil Jones (Blythewood, S.C./Pasco-Hernando CC) drilled a deep 3-pointer to cut the deficit to two. Junior wing Godson Eneogwe (Chicago, Ill./Illinois Central) then blocked a shot on the other and Jones scooped in transition layup to tie the game at 106 with 1:10 to play.

Matt Poches split a pair of free throws  with 31 seconds left before redshirt-sophomore forward Evan McGaughey (Carthage, Ill./Illini West) came free in the paint and nailed a layup off a pass from junior guard Nate Des Jardins (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods).

With Quincy leading by one, 108-107, Drew Lehman missed a layup for Ferris State, McGaughey corralled the rebound and then went to the line. He sank the first, then missed the second and recovered the offensive board to secure the wild win.

The fact the game was in overtime was a story in itself as both teams overcame large deficits in regulation.

The Hawks (1-0) led by as many as 11 points in the first half only to have the Bulldogs (0-1) rally to go up 15 points with 8:31 to play in the second half.

Sophomore guard Herm Senor II (Springfield, Ill./Southeast) hit a 3-pointer with five minutes left in the second half to cut the deficit to 66-62. Finally, with 2:05 left Eneogwe hit two free throws to give the Hawks a 69-68 lead.

Junior forward Dalton Hoover (Pittsfield, Ill.) blocked a shot on the other end and junior guard Thomas Jackson (Louisville, Ky./Cincinnati State) converted layups on two straight possessions to build Quincy's lead to 73-68. Jackson's free throws made it a seven-point game with 40 seconds left, but the Bulldogs did not go away.

Josh Fleming buried a 3-pointer with seven seconds left before Jackson turned it over on the baseline to give the Bulldogs the ball with four seconds left. Lehman then knocked down a 3-pointer to tie it at 76 and send it to overtime.

Jones' 3-pointer in the first overtime tied the game at 83 with 22 seconds left and the game went on two a second OT period. The Hawks had a five-point lead in that period, but the Bulldogs finished on a 9-4 run, including Noah King's runner with four seconds left to tie the game. Jackson raced the ball up the floor, but his fall-away runner came up short to send it to the third overtime.

The Hawks were outmanned on the glass, 59-48, with the Bulldogs snagging 29 offensive rebounds. They had a 28-8 edge in second-chance points. The Bulldogs shot just 39.1 percent (36-for-92) from the floor, but they had 20 more field goal attempts. Neither team shot well from the line with Quincy shooting 59.1 percent (26-for-44) and Ferris State hitting 63.2 percent (24-for-38).

Senor and Eneogwe led six Hawks in double figures with 20 points apiece. Senor doubled his previous career high in scoring and also set personal bests in rebounds (nine) and assists (six).

Jackson had 18 points and McGaughey and Jones had 16 each. Hoover had 10 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double.

Lehman led all scorers with 29 points for the Bulldogs. Fleming had 22 points, 13 rebounds, five assists, three blocks and two steals.

The Hawks will continue the Microtel GLVC/GLIAC Challenge on Sunday (Nov. 16), taking on Grand Valley State at 2:15 p.m. at Pepsi Arena. The Lakers lost to Missouri-St. Louis, 58-53, in Saturday's opener. The Tritons and Bulldogs square off at noon Sunday.
