Lakers Edge Past Hawks, 69-67

QUINCY, Ill. – Grand Valley State brought its reputation for physical, defensive basketball to Pepsi Arena on Sunday (Nov. 16) afternoon and edged out Quincy, 69-67, to send the Hawks to their first loss of the season.

The Hawks (1-1) overcame a 16-point deficit in the second half and had a chance to tie the game at the buzzer, but Quincy's final shot attempt came up too long. Quincy was coming off a triple-overtime win over Ferris State on Saturday.

The game produced 54 fouls and five technical fouls in what turned out to be a physical contest. Neither team took great advantage at the line with the Hawks shooting 68 percent (23-for-34) and the Lakers hitting at 70 percent (28-for-40).

The Lakers (1-1) led by double digits for most of the first half and built their lead to as many as 16 points, 56-40, with 7:54 to play, but the Hawks chipped away at that edge.

A slam by redshirt-sophomore forward Evan McGaughey (Carthage, Ill./Illini West) and an isolation layup by junior guard Thomas Jackson (Louisville, Ky./Cincinnati State) cut the lead down to 60-56 with 3:44 to play.

Darren Kapustka hit a layup with 2:38 remaining to push the Lakers' lead back to 64-59, but the Hawks tightened the screws defensively and did not allow another field goal.

Junior wing Godson Eneogwe (Chicago, Ill./Illinois Central) hit a couple free throws with 1:15 left to cut it to 66-64 before Aaron Hayes split a pair on GVSU's next trip.

Senior guard Ja'mil Jones (Blythewood, S.C./Pasco-Hernando CC) knocked down a mid-range jumper with 47 seconds left to make it 67-66 to the Lakers.

Kapustka then hit two free throws with 22 seconds left to make it a three-point game again. Junior guard Nate Des Jardins (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) attacked the rim on the Hawks' next possession and sank the first free throw, before scrambling after the rebound on the second shot, Ricardo Carbajal tracked down the board, but fell down and was whistled for a travel to give QU one last chance.

Jackson set up the offense and found junior forward Dalton Hoover (Pittsfield, Ill.) for a 12-footer on the left baseline, but he could not convert.

The Hawks trailed 34-24 at halftime and never led in the game as the Lakers sustained a close lead for most of the first half.

Jones led the Hawks with 16 points while Des Jardins chipped in with 12 points on the strength of three 3-pointers. Jackson added 11 points and three assists.

The Lakers held the Hawks to 35.2 percent (19-for-54) shooting from the floor and connected on 43.2 percent (19-for-44) on their offensive end.

Ryan Sabin led all scorers with 17 points and Carbajal added 11 points and eight boards.

The Hawks will return to Pepsi Arena on Wednesday (Nov. 19) night when they take on MacMurray at 7:30 p.m.
