Hawks Lock Down on Defense in 96-67 Win

QUINCY, Ill. – It took a little while for the Quincy University men's basketball team to get into the flow of its offense against MacMurray on Wednesday (Nov. 19), but the defense was dominant on the way to a 96-67 win over the Highlanders at Pepsi Arena.
 
The Hawks (2-1) turned 24 turnovers into 24 points and forced the visitors to shoot just 28.8 percent (19-for-66) from the field. Quincy outpaced MacMurray, 24-0, on the fast break.
 
Quincy trailed just one time in the game after a 3-pointer by Kollin Keltner with 14:55 left in the first half made it 10-9. The Hawks then went on an 11-2 run to push their lead to 20-12 after a couple free throws by junior forward Dalton Hoover (Pittsfield, Ill.), who had a team-high 15 points to go with five rebounds and a career-high four blocks.
 
The Hawks led by as many as 18 points in the first half and held a 42-29 advantage at the intermission.
 
The only place on the stat sheet the Hawks struggled was on the glass. The Hawks out-rebounded the Highlanders, 46-44, but MacMurray took a 27-21 advantage into halftime. The Highlanders finished with 23 offensive rebounds.
 
In the second half, the Hawks turned up the heat offensively, shooting 62.5 percent (20-for-32) from the floor, including 4-for-7 from 3-point range.
 
The Hawks also showed flashes above the rim as junior wing Godson Eneogwe (Chicago, Ill./Illinois Central) threw down a couple alley-oops off transition lob passes from sophomore guard Herm Senor II (Springfield, Ill./Southeast). Eneogwe finished with 13 points and two blocks, while Senor filled up the stat sheet with 13 points, six rebounds, six assists and two steals.
 
The Hawks blocked seven shots in the game and had 14 steals. For the game, the Hawks shot 54.8 percent (34-for-62) from the field.
 
Junior guard Thomas Jackson (Louisville, Ky./Cincinnati State) had 14 points and senior guard Ja'mil Jones (Blythewood, S.C./Pasco-Hernando CC) added 11 to round out the QU players in double figures. Junior guard Grant Meyer (Sellersburg, Ind./Silver Creek) had seven points and six boards in 11 minutes off the bench.
 
Dylan Guthrie led the way for the Highlanders with 16 points and eight rebounds and James Williams added 13 points.
 
The Hawks return to the court on Saturday (Nov. 22) at 3 p.m. when they entertain Lindenwood for an in-region matchup at Pepsi Arena.
