Lady Hawks Clinch GLVC Tourney Berth With 1-0 Win

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's soccer team needed a win or a draw on Wednesday (Oct. 29) night against Truman State to guarantee a spot in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament.

The Lady Hawks took care of business at Legends Stadium, using an early goal to defeat the Bulldogs, 1-0.

Head coach Dave Musso this week preached the importance of playing from ahead and the Lady Hawks did that on Wednesday.

In the seventh minute, freshman defender Bailey Greubel (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx Hall) sent in long free kick that junior midfielder Ashley Burton (St. Louis, Mo./Oakville) was able to touch down and then knock over the outstretched arms of TSU keeper Katie Mattingly. It was Burton's fourth goal of the season and Greubel's first career assist.

Getting that lead allowed the Lady Hawks to relax and they were able to possess the ball with a bit more confidence. This was the first time the Lady Hawks had a lead since a 2-0 win over Saint Joseph's.

QU continued to threaten in the first half, out-shooting the Bulldogs, 6-2, in the first 45 minutes, but the Lady Hawks were unable to pick up an insurance goal.

Quincy remained organized at the back in the second half and Burton and junior Haylye Markway (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx Hall) won the ball consistently in the midfield.

The Bulldogs out-shot the Lady Hawks, 6-3, in the second half, but four of those shots came in the final four minutes as the visitors looked for the equalizer. Their best opportunity came in the 87th minute as freshman keeper Megan Swanson (St. Charles, Mo./St. Dominic) knocked Megan Whitehead's shot wide to concede a corner kick.

Off the corner, Jessica Hanson's shot went high and Swanson made another save in the 89th minute to keep the 'Dogs off the board.

This is the ninth straight time the Lady Hawks have reached the GLVC Tournament. Quincy is the No. 6 seed in the tournament and will travel to Kansas City to take on No. 3 seed Rockhurst on Sunday (Nov. 2) at noon in the quarterfinal round. The final two rounds will be played at the site of the highest remaining seed.
