Hawks Clip Eagles; Finish 3-0 at GLVC/GLIAC Crossover

QUINCY, Ill - The Quincy University women's volleyball team completed their weekend sweep of the GLVC/GLIAC Crossover Tournament with a 3-1 win over Ashland University on Saturday (Oct. 18).  QU dropped the first set of the match 25-21, but found their stride in the second set with a 25-22 win.  The Hawks finished off the Eagles with 25-13 and 25-17 wins in the third and fourth sets.  The Hawks hit .298 in the match and had 59 digs to Ashland's 39 digs.

The Eagles (5-13) fell behind 12-9 in the first set before tying up the set at 13-13.  Ashland went on a five-point run to take an 18-14 lead.

The Hawks (7-15) went on a three-point run to pull within 20-18 forcing an Ashland timeout.  The Eagles came out of the timeout to score five of the next eight points to win the first set 25-21.

The Hawks trailed 20-17 late in the second set.  QU scored four straight points to take a 21-20 lead.  Ashland tied it up with a kill by Rylee Scott.  Jessica Licurgo answered with a kill to regain the lead.  The Hawks score three of the next four points on two Ashland attacking errors and a kill by Bekah Raebel to win the set 25-22.

The Hawks carried that momentum into the third set scoring five points in a row to start the set.  The Hawks eventually took an 11-1 lead and carried their double-digit lead for the rest of the match.  The Hawks hit .500 in the set to win 25-13.  Ashland hit -.071 in the third set.

The Eagles started the fourth set with five kills and a service ace to take a 7-2 lead early.  Head coach Bob Crank pulled a quick substitution so he could talk to his libero, Sommer Holder, and change up the game-plan.  The change worked as the Hawks came storming back to tie the set at 14-14.  QU scored the next two points on an Eagles attacking error and a kill by Samantha Haegele.

Ashland tied the set at 16-16, before the Hawks went on a four-point run to take a 20-16 lead.  QU finished the match with five straight points to win 25-17 and finish with a 3-1 match victory.

The Hawks were led by Samantha Haegele with 16 kills.  She hit .400 in the match.  Carly Schmitt recorded 10 kills and Emily Lindemulder finished with nine kills.  Sommer Holder held down the Hawk defense with 18 digs.  Miranda Rodriguez led QU with 29 assists.

The Hawks finished the GLVC/GLIAC Crossover Tournament with three wins.  They had two yesterday against Walsh University (3-1) and Lake Erie College (3-0), before finishing off the weekend with the win today against Ashland (3-1).

The Hawks will travel to the University of Southern Indiana on Oct. 25.  The match against the Screaming Eagles is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. ET.
