Hawks Sweep Day One at GLVC/GLIAC Crossover

QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University women's volleyball team won their first two matches of the GLVC/GLIAC Crossover Tournament on Friday (Oct. 17).  QU started with a 3-1 win against Walsh University in the morning session and came back for a 3-0 sweep in the evening session against Lake Erie College.  The Hawks totaled 18 team blocks in the two matches and hit .212 in both contests.  The Great Lakes Valley Conference leads the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference 21-3 after day one of the tournament.

The Hawks (6-15) were slow to start in the first match against Walsh (1-16).  The Cavaliers jumped out to an 18-10 lead with the help of a seven-point run.  The Hawks had one block in the first set and fell 25-19.

The Hawks woke up in the second set with the scored knotted at 16-16.  QU scored four straight points to take a commanding lead.  The Hawks finished the second set trading points with Walsh to win 25-21.

QU turned in their best set of the day in the third set hitting .571.  The Hawks had five team blocks in the third set.  QU had a four-point run early to take a 9-4 lead.  They had two more four-point runs in the set before finishing the 25-14 set win.  Carly Schmitt had five kills in the third set and Samantha Haegele recorded back-to-back aces.

Walsh took a 16-13 lead in the fourth set, but the Hawks regrouped and rattled off six straight points to take a 19-16 lead.  Walsh tied the match at 25-25 and Bekah Raebel answered with a kill.  Walsh committed an attacking error to give QU the 27-25 set win and the 3-1 match victory.

Carly Schmitt led the team with 11 kills.  Emily Lindemulder had 10 kills and six blocks.  Jessica Licurgo and Bekah Raebel both contributed five blocks a piece.  Rachel Shores led the Hawks with 13 digs at the libero position.  Rachael Binash finished with 17 assists.

The Hawks continued to roll in the second match of the day against Lake Erie (2-17).  QU took the first set 25-18 against the Storm with runs of four and five points.

QU had a pair of five-point runs in the second set to top the Storm 25-19 for a 2-0 match lead.

The Hawks jumped out to an early lead, but the Storm tied the set at 19-19 and had a set point at 24-23.  QU took a timeout and tied the set at 24-24 on a service error.  Lake Erie scored again to have another opportunity for a set point.  Nicole Allaria and Jessica Licurgo blocked the Storm attack to tie the set at 25-25.  Lake Erie took another lead with a kill, but gave QU two points with a service error and an attacking error.  The Storm recorded a kill to tie the set at 27-27.  Nicole Allaria and Jessica Wicinski finished off the set with back-to-back kills for a 29-27 set win and a sweep for the match victory.

Jessica Wicinski led the Hawks with 11 kills in the first start of her collegiate career.  Nicole Allaria led the team with 12 digs and added four kills and three blocks.  Jessica Licurgo recorded six blocks and eight kills for QU.  Cassandra Cahill led the Hawks with 12 assists.  

The Hawks play one more match in the GLVC/GLIAC Crossover Tournament against Ashland University tomorrow (Oct. 18).  The match at the Great Lakes Center in Aurora, Ill. is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
