Lady Hawks Top Saint Joseph's, 2-0

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's soccer team has been dealing with some pent up frustration as it has struggled scoring goals recently.

The Lady Hawks solved those issues on Sunday (Oct. 12) afternoon with a comprehensive 2-0 win over Saint Joseph's at Legends Stadium in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.

Quincy (7-4-2, 6-2-2 GLVC) had scored just one goal in its last three games, including two scoreless ties. On Sunday, the Lady Hawks out-shot the Pumas (1-10-2, 0-8-2 GLVC), 25-3, and dictated the possession and tempo of the game. Quincy also held a 13-1 edge in corner kicks.

The Lady Hawks ended their scoring drought in the 25th minute. Junior midfielder Ashley Burton (St. Louis, Mo./Oakville) sent in a cross that freshman midifielder Natalie Quisenberry (St. Louis, Mo./Lafayette) settled for central midfielder Haylye Markway (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx Hall). The junior drove a shot off her laces inside the near post to give the Lady Hawks a 1-0 lead. It was Markway's team-leading fourth goal of the season.

The Lady Hawks did not allow a shot in the first half on their way to their ninth clean sheet of the season in 13 games.

Quincy made it 2-0 in the 62nd minute when Quisenberry sent in a low cross that Burton ran onto and slid into the goal for her third goal of the season. Those were the first two assists in Quisenberry's career.

Freshman goalkeeper Megan Swanson (St. Charles, Mo./St. Dominic) made one save in the game as the QU defense kept the Pumas at bay.

The Lady Hawks now head north for a GLVC road trip starting Friday (Oct. 17) night at Lewis. The Flyers (2-6-4, 2-5-3 GLVC) are coming off a 2-1 defeat at Maryville on Sunday. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
