Hawks Knock Off GLVC Foe Drury, Split Saturday

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's volleyball team had two matches on the docket on Saturday (Oct. 11) and opened the day with a thrilling, 3-2 (19-25, 25-19, 22-25, 25-21, 15-12) win at GLVC West foe Drury in Springfield, Mo. The Hawks then dropped a 3-1 (25-17, 22-25, 25-17, 25-23) decision in nonconference action against Southern Arkansas.
 
Quincy (4-15, 2-9 GLVC) dropped the first set to the Panthers, 25-19, but bounced back to win Set 2 by the same score and even the match. The Hawks reeled off five straight points early in the set with freshman Miranda Rodriguez (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) on the serve and never trailed after that point. Rodriguez and sophomore Emily Lindemulder (Homer Glen, Ill./Chicago Christian) finished the set with a block.
 
Drury (8-8, 3-8 GLVC) took the Set 3 lead for good with a 4-0 run that gave the Panthers a 14-10 lead. They went on to win the set, 25-22.
 
The Hawks needed to win Set 4 to extend the match and they never trailed after scoring the first three points. Freshman Jessica Licurgo (Goodyear, Ariz./Sandra Day O'Conner) and senior Carly Schmitt (Johnsburg, Ill.) had a block to win the set, 25-21.

Quincy trailed early in the decisive fifth set, 5-3, but scored the next three points to take a 6-5 lead. The teams then traded points until it was 12-12 and the Hawks scored the final three to win the match. Freshman Bekah Raebel (Waterford, Wis./Waterford Union), Licurgo and senior Samantha Haegele (St. Louis, Mo./Oakville) scored the final three points for the Hawks, who hit .151 for the match and limited Drury to a .094 hitting percentage.
 
Schmitt (15 kills, 10 digs), Haegele (14 kills, 15 digs) and Rodriguez (43 assists, 17 digs) all had double-doubles for the Hawks. Raebel (10 kills) was the third QU player in double digits. Licurgo, Raebel and Lindemulder had seven blocks apiece to lead the front row.
 
The Hawks out-blocked the Panthers, 14-6. Brooke Antenen had a triple-double with 11 kills, 43 assists and 18 digs to lead Drury.
 
Coming off their high of the first match, the Hawks carried momentum into their match against Southern Arkansas, winning the first set, 25-17, over the Muleriders (9-13). The Hawks limited SAU to negative-.024 hitting in the frame and hit .178 on the offensive side. Raebel's kill gave the Hawks the set win.
 
The Muleriders bounced back in the next two sets as they did not trail in either one. The Hawks led much of Set 4, going up as many as five points on multiple occasions, but they weren't able to close it out. QU still led, 23-22, after an SAU service error, but the Muleriders scored the final three points of the set to take the win.
 
Raebel, Schmitt and Haegele had 10 kills each to lead Quincy with Haegele earning her second double-double of the day also cleaning up 18 digs. Freshman Rachel Shores (Huntley, Ill.) had 22 digs in the second match and finished the day with 38.
 
Rodriguez dished out 27 assists and Raebel had a team-high seven blocks.
 
Amanda Monge had 16 kills to lead the Muleriders, who hit .103 in the match. SAU limited Quincy to a .068 hitting percentage.
 
The Hawks return to the court on Friday (Oct. 17) as they begin play at the Mizuno GLVC/GLIAC Crossover Tournament in Aurora, Ill. The schedule for the event will be announced early next week.
