Tennis Teams Wrap Up Spring Break Trip to Hilton Head

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's and women's tennis teams got away from snow, ice and cold over their spring break and each played five matches in Hilton Head, S.C. last week.

The men's team finished with a 2-3 record while the women opened the trip with four losses before closing it with an 8-1 win over Shepherd.

The QU men dropped their spring break opener to Catawba (8-1) before picking up two straight wins over Tennessee Wesleyan (6-3) and Grand Rapids Community College (8-1). The Hawks finished the trip with a couple losses – to Mount Olive (7-2) and Shepherd (5-4).

The Quincy men were led by sophomore Ian Hinkamper (Quincy, Ill./Notre Dame), who went 4-0 at first singles. He dropped only one set – the first set against Mount Olive's Edgar Bub – in his four matches. Hinkamper also played with junior Lane Luhring (Parkersburg, Iowa/Aplington-Parkersburg) at first singles and the pair finished 3-1.

Senior John Moskal (Burr Ridge, Ill./Lyons Township) went 3-2 on the trip, going 1-1 at third singles and 2-1 at the fourth spot. Freshman Patrick Kuhle (Decatur, Ill./St. Theresa) was also 3-2, picking up all three wins at fifth singles. Sophomore Ethan Arns (Quincy, Ill./Notre Dame) won three matches – all at sixth singles.

Moskal combined with junior Dan Martin (Johnsburg, Ill.) to go 2-3 in doubles play, including a 2-2 mark at second doubles. Arns and Kuhle played together – mostly at third doubles – going 2-3 overall.

The men's team is now 4-4 in dual matches this season.

The women's team opened the trip with losses to Catawba (8-1), Tennessee Wesleyan (5-4), Elizabethtown (8-1), Mount Olive (9-0) before picking up a win over Shepherd (8-1).

On the women's side, the Lady Hawks were led by two singles wins apiece from freshman Anna Morrissey (Alton, Ill./Marquette Catholic), sophomore Ashley Longshore (Keokuk, Iowa) and freshman Samantha Jackson (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way North).

Sophomores Michelle Gass (Belleville, Ill./Belleville East) and Samantha Halfpap (Quincy, Ill.) each picked up a win in singles play.

The pairing of Morrissey and Halfpap at second doubles proved to be formidable for Quincy as that team went 4-1 on the trip.

The Lady Hawks are now 3-5 overall in duals in the 2012-13 season.

Both teams will return to the court on Friday and Saturday (March 15-16) when they travel to Illinois Springfield for the Hack Kellner Invitational.
