Brad Hoyt, the newly appointed head coach for Quincy University men’s basketball for the 2024-25 season, brings an extensive and impressive résumé to his new role. Before joining Quincy, Coach Hoyt dedicated over a decade to John Wood Community College, where his leadership left an indelible mark both on the court and across campus.
Hoyt served as the Director of Athletics at his alma mater, John Wood, for 12 years and as the head coach of the men’s basketball team for 14 seasons. Under his direction, the Trail Blazers experienced significant growth and success. His tenure as Athletic Director saw the expansion of the athletic department, adding women's volleyball, men's and women's soccer, and eSports between 2018 and 2020. This expansion more than doubled the athletic footprint of the college, making sports a central pillar of John Wood’s strategic growth plan.
In February 2024, Hoyt took on an additional role as the Dean of Student Affairs. His responsibilities expanded to overseeing various aspects of student services, including admissions, financial aid, advising, student life, and disability services, demonstrating his versatility as an administrator and leader in higher education.
As head coach, Hoyt's impact on the basketball program at John Wood was transformative. Over his 13-year coaching career with the Trail Blazers, Hoyt amassed an impressive 257-156 overall record, with a dominant 91-35 record in conference play, solidifying him as the winningest coach in the programs history. His teams consistently achieved excellence, finishing in the top two of their conference in 10 seasons and capturing six conference championships. Hoyt's squads also made nine appearances in the Region 24 championship game, securing four Region 24/District championships and earning four berths to the NJCAA DII National Tournament (2014, 2015, 2019, and 2021). Notably, his teams were ranked in the NJCAA DII Top-20 each season.
Coach Hoyt’s focus on player development resulted in numerous accolades for his athletes. Over the past decade, he coached eight Conference and Region Players of the Year, eight NJCAA First or Second Team All-Americans, and 27 All-Region selections. His teams also saw 30 players earn All-Conference honors, with four of them recognized as Conference Freshman of the Year. Hoyt's coaching excellence did not go unnoticed, earning him multiple Coach of the Year awards at the conference, region, district, and IBCA levels.
Beyond his coaching achievements, Hoyt's influence extended into various leadership roles on campus and within the NJCAA. At John Wood, he was a key figure in initiatives aimed at student success and inclusivity. He chaired the Leadership Council and served on the Diversity and Inclusion Committee, the Student-Athlete Hall of Fame Committee, and the Campus Climate Committee. His involvement in student affairs included leading initiatives in marketing, technology, and accreditation processes.
On a national level, Hoyt contributed to the NJCAA as a founding member of its Diversity Committee and served in leadership roles, including chairing the Region 24 Men’s Basketball DII committee. In 2022, he began a two-year term as the Men's Region 24 Director, overseeing all men's sports within the region and contributing to national policy development.
Coach Hoyt’s educational journey began with an Associate's Degree from John Wood, followed by a Bachelor's Degree from Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in 1997. He pursued graduate studies at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale.
Off the court, Coach Hoyt is a family man. He and his wife, Nikki, celebrated their 26th wedding anniversary in the summer of 2024. They are proud parents to three children: Sydnie, Jake, and Luke.
