Biography

2025-26 (Junior): Russell continued to cement himself as one of the top wrestlers in program history during his junior season, finishing with a 30-10 overall record and a .750 win percentage, both of which tied for the team lead. It marked his second straight 30-win season. He was also outstanding in dual competition, going 14-3 overall and 4-1 in conference matchups while posting a .824 dual win percentage and scoring 62 dual points.

Russell recorded three falls, 12 tech falls, four major decisions, and eight decision victories during the season. He also added two ranked wins, which tied for the team lead, and climbed as high as No. 7 in the national rankings at 149 pounds.

Russell opened the year with a second-place finish at the Luther Hill Open (11/1/25) before adding a fourth-place finish at the Luther College Open (11/15/25). He also earned a seventh-place finish at the 46th Annual Midwest Classic (12/13-14/25), one of the top regular-season tournaments in NCAA Division II wrestling.

Russell closed the season by winning the NCAA Division II Regional #4 title (3/1/26), becoming the second regional champion in Quincy men’s wrestling history. He went on to compete at the 2026 NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships (3/13-14/26), where he went 1-2 on the national stage.

Along with Callan Ivy, Russell became one of the first two Hawks to earn All-GLVC honors, receiving Second Team All-Conference recognition at 149 pounds.

2024-25 (Sophomore): Russell put together a record-breaking season for the Hawks, finishing with a 31-9 overall record and a .775 win percentage. He led the team in both categories, setting new single-season program records for wins and win percentage. Russell was also dominant in dual action, going 15-2 overall and 5-2 in conference matchups while setting program records for dual wins and dual points with 70.

Russell was one of Quincy’s most consistent bonus-point threats, recording two falls, a team-leading 19 tech falls, four major decisions, and six decision victories. His 19 tech falls also set a new single-season program record. He added one ranked win during the season.

Russell opened the year with a second-place finish at the Luther Hill Invitational (11/2/24) before winning the first tournament title of his career at the Service Salute Open (11/9/24), taking first in the Open 141 division. He added a third-place finish at the Kaufman/Brand/Bayly Open (11/24/24).

Russell closed the season by placing third at NCAA Division II Regional #4 (3/1/25), becoming the second national qualifier in Quincy men’s wrestling history. He went on to compete at the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships (3/14-15/25), where he went 1-2 on the national stage.

2023-24 (Freshman): Russell made an immediate impact for the Hawks during his freshman season, finishing with an 18-14 overall record and tying for the team lead in wins. He posted a .563 win percentage while leading Quincy in dual victories with an 8-4 mark and scoring a team-high 38 dual points.

Russell was one of the Hawks’ top bonus-point wrestlers, recording seven falls, a team-leading six tech falls, one major decision, four decision victories, and one ranked win. He made his collegiate debut at the Kaufman/Brand/Bayly Open (11/4/23), where he went 5-1 and earned a third-place finish in the Amateur 141 division.

Russell added a sixth-place finish at the Lindenwood Open (11/18/23) before closing the season with a fourth-place finish at NCAA Division II Regional #4 (3/2/24), coming up just short of qualifying for the national tournament.

Personal: Russell is from Yuma, Arizona, where he attended Yuma High School. A standout student-athlete, Sabian was his high school valedictorian and put together an accomplished wrestling career with 133 career wins, three state placer finishes, and three sectional championships. He also competed at the Arizona Division 3 State Championships.

Sabian is the son of Emily and Ben Russell and has two siblings, Katelynn Dodge and Lucian Russell. Outside of wrestling, he enjoys lifting weights and swimming. His favorite athletes are Spencer Lee and LeBron James, and he is a fan of the Los Angeles Lakers and Iowa wrestling.
