QUINCY, Ill. – Quincy University football's Eddie Johnson has been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week following his standout performance in the Hawks' 34-27 Homecoming victory over Lincoln University of Missouri.

The honor is the first GLVC Defensive Player of the Week award of Johnson's career and marks the second time a Hawk has earned the conference's weekly defensive honor this season. Jordan Elmore previously received the award on Sept. 8.

Johnson helped lead the Quincy defense as the Hawks picked up their first victory of the season and opened GLVC play with a win. He tied for the game high with 11 tackles, recording seven solo stops and four assists while adding a tackle for loss of three yards.

His biggest play of the afternoon came midway through the second quarter with Quincy trailing 13-7. Johnson intercepted a pass at the Lincoln 45-yard line and returned it 45 yards for a touchdown, giving the Hawks a 14-13 advantage with 6:47 remaining in the half. It was the first interception of Johnson's collegiate career and helped put Quincy in front for good.

Through three games this season, Johnson has totaled 31 tackles with 10 solo stops and 21 assists. He has added 3.5 tackles for loss, half a sack, one interception and one quarterback hurry while recording 11 tackles in each of the last two games.

Johnson and the Hawks return to QU Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 26, for their final non-conference matchup of the season against Wayne State (Mich.). Kickoff is scheduled for 1 PM.
