QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's lacrosse team saw its three-game winning streak come to an end Sunday afternoon, falling 18-10 to Ashland at QU Stadium. Despite the loss, the Hawks celebrated two major milestones as
Anni Moran surpassed 100 career goals and
Madison Whiting Wagner recorded her 200th career save.
Quincy struck first early in the opening quarter when
Alaina Wilkinson found the back of the net just under a minute into play to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead. Ashland responded with a pair of goals to take the lead before Moran evened the score at 2-2 midway through the quarter, finishing a feed from
Amelia Ham for her 100th career goal.
The Eagles gained momentum late in the first period, scoring several goals in a short span to build separation. Wilkinson added her second goal of the afternoon late in the quarter, but Ashland carried an 8-3 lead into the second period.
Ashland continued to extend its advantage during the second quarter, scoring five goals while limiting the Hawks offensively. Quincy broke the eight-goal run late in the half when Moran converted on a man-up opportunity off an assist from Wilkinson, sending the Hawks into halftime trailing 13-4.
The Hawks showed signs of life in the third quarter as Moran added two more goals on extra-player opportunities. However, Ashland continued to find the net and maintained a 16-6 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Quincy mounted a late push in the final period.
Amelia Ham scored twice, including an unassisted goal early in the quarter and another off an assist from Wilkinson. Wilkinson added her third goal of the afternoon before Moran capped the Hawks' scoring with a man-up goal assisted by Ham. Ashland added two late goals to seal the 18-10 victory.
Moran led the Hawks offensively with five goals, while Wilkinson recorded three goals and two assists.
Amelia Ham contributed two goals and three assists, helping Quincy finish with 10 goals on 24 shots in the contest.
Defensively, Quincy held a 16-15 edge in ground balls and won 14 draw controls, led by Moran and
Mikenna Ham. The Hawks also forced 16 turnovers throughout the game. In goal, Whiting Wagner made two saves in the first half and surpassed the 200-career-save milestone, while
Ava Condos added three saves in relief during the second half.
The Hawks will return to action on Monday, March 16, when they travel to Daytona Beach, Florida, for a neutral-site matchup against Saint Anselm, with the opening draw scheduled for 3:00 PM.
