Defensive Stand in Game One Favors Hawks, Split Day with Miners

Quincy, Ill. - The Quincy University softball team hosted the Miners of Missouri S&T on Monday afternoon (Apr. 7). Quincy faced strong pitching from the Miners but took a 2-1 in the 6th inning to secure the win in game one. A boost in hits from the Miners helped them to a 15-1 score in game two.

Game One
Both Hawks' and Miners' defense was efficient in game one, going three-up, three-down in the first inning and a half. Kenzie Moss had an excellent grab on a high line drive in the top of the second inning that preserved the clean slate. Allyson Maynard started things off for the Hawks with a single up the line and got to second on a sacrifice bunt from Allison Kaiser, but the Hawks were sent back to the field shortly after.

The Miners got on the board in the third inning after two errors from the Hawks.  Quincy stopped another run from getting through in the fourth inning on a grounded double play to Moss who tagged second and sent the ball to first to get the batter out.

A two-out rally in the sixth inning helped the Hawks to victory. Kenzie Moss started with a triple down the right field line and was brought in by Maynard who sent a floated ball to the wall in right center. Isabella Shields added another hit to the middle that brought Maynard in from second to take the lead late in the game. Three quick outs in the bottom of the seventh inning sealed the deal for the Hawks game one win. Kaelyn Conger got the win for game one after throwing a complete game with four strikeouts.

Game Two
Quincy kept Missouri S&T off the bags in the first inning, and despite getting lead-off Jessie Martin on with a walk, the Hawks could not get her around. The Miners put two runs on the scoreboard in the second inning and added two more in the third for a 4-0 lead on the Hawks.

Lindsey Fischer started things off for the Hawks in the fourth on an error from the shortstop. Quick base running from Fischer ended with her touching home plate after a stolen base and a single from Moss out to center field. The Miners added to their lead in the fourth inning with a run off a double to to the wall and a two-run home run. The Hawks were unlucky in the fourth inning, and grounded into a double play that limited their opportunities.

The Hawks fell into some trouble in the sixth inning, giving up eight runs on four hits. Alexus Freeman came to finish the game in the circle and struck out the final batter of the inning.

Emma Stieferman started the game in the circle for the Hawks and struck out one batter in three and a half innings. Kaidence Dumas came in to relieve Stieferman in the third inning.

The Hawks travel to Missouri this coming weekend for doubleheaders against the Tritons of Missouri-St. Louis and Lincoln University of Missouri.
