Quincy, Ill. - The Quincy University softball team hosted their final doubleheader of the year on Sunday (Apr. 27) against the Saints of Maryville University. Despite an early lead in game two, the Hawks fell to a strong Saints team, 4-2 and 10-3.
Game One
Quincy played well early on in the first game, shutting down the Maryville offense and loading up the bases in the first inning. A fielder's choice to the Saints' shortstop put the Hawks to a halt and ended the inning. The Saints got a run on the board in the third inning on a wild pitch.
Mykah Hurley stole the show on the field in the fourth inning with two quick grabs at third to keep the Saints at bay. The Saints bulked up the scoreboard with three runs in the sixth, however, putting the Hawks under 4-0.
Emma Stieferman came in for relief in the sixth inning, and with help from
Jessie Martin, ended the inning.
The Hawks had their share of runs in the bottom of the inning, starting off with a left field single from
Kenzie Moss.
Isabella Shields doubled through the gap, bringing Moss home.
Allyson Maynard and
Kinsey Biggerstaff each put the ball into play, bringing Shields home for the Hawks' final run of the game.
Kaelyn Conger made her final start in brown and gold, striking three out. Stieferman struck out one in the loss.
Game Two
Quincy started game two getting out of a first inning jam with Hurley's force out to home plate. Both teams stayed silent until a two-out rally in the bottom of the third inning, when Shields and Moss loaded the front half of the bases in preparation for Maynard's final home run as a Hawk. Maynard sent the ball clear over the center field wall, starting Quincy off with a 3-0 lead on the Saints. Maryville was quick to respond and added four to the board in the top of the fourth inning.
A home run for the Saints put the Hawks under two, but two hits for Quincy in the fifth inning gave them an opportunity to take back the lead. Similar to the third inning, Shields and Moss both loaded the front half of the bases. Maynard walked to load the bases, but Biggerstaff could not come around on the ball to end the inning. Despite putting the ball in play, Quincy could not get any momentum in the bottom half of the game, falling to the Saints in the end.
Kaidence Dumas started in the circle for the Hawks and recorded one strikeout before Stieferman closed out the seventh inning.
The Hawks graduate seven seniors in 2025--
