Hawks Downed by Prairie Stars on the Road

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Springfield, Ill. - The Quincy University softball team faced the University of Illinois Springfield on Sunday afternoon (Mar. 9). The Prairie Stars were dominant in game one, beating the Hawks 20-0, but in game two, the Hawks gave a good fight in game two, losing 7-5.

Game One
The Prairie Stars started off strong with a triple to deep right field, leading off a six-run inning in bottom of the first. Kenzie Moss singled into the outfield in the top of the second, but got caught stealing to end the inning. The Hawks gave up three unearned runs in the bottom of the inning.

Mykah Hurley reached first base on an error by the Prairie Stars' shortstop. Allison Kaiser sent the ball to left-side of the field as well, but a 5-4 putout from Illinois Springfield got Hurley out at second.

The Prairie Stars had another strong push in the fourth inning, scoring 10 unanswered runs. Quincy tried to combat with their own at bats at the top of the fifth inning, but Hurley was stranded on first after her single to center field.

Kaidence Dumas got the start in the circle for the Hawks, but was retired in the first inning by Alexus Freeman. Freeman took the bulk of the action in game one, and Emma Stieferman closed out with two strikeouts.

Game Two
Quincy found their groove early in game two with their rally starting on Kinsey Biggerstaff's single. Two wild pitches and a ball sent into play from Allyson Maynard got the Hawks into scoring position. Moss grounded out, bringing Biggerstaff home. Hurley then hit one to left field bringing in Maynard for the Hawks second run of the day. Freeman came around for the final run of the inning on an error from the Prairie Stars.

Illinois Springfield was quick to respond to the Hawks early push, mustering up three runs of its own. Quincy cut things short for the Prairie Stars on a quick steal play at second.

The Hawks continued to work their bats around in the second inning, but it was a third inning full of hits that helped the Hawks nab two more runs. Moss started the action with a double up the middle, and Hurley brought her home with a single to right field. Ryleigh Jones found the same pocket and brought Hurley home in similar fashion.

Quincy held the lead through the fourth inning, but the Prairie Stars found an opportunity in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie things up. A single up the left side added to their run tally and tied things up with the Hawks 5-5 in the fifth inning.

Quincy got their bats moving in the sixth inning, Stieferman starting things off with a single up the right side. Kaiser got on base and both Hawks made it into scoring position on a passed ball, but were stranded at the end of the inning. Two sacrifice fly balls in the bottom of the inning sealed the deal for the Prairie Stars, taking game two and completing the sweep.

The Hawks look to get back in the win column with a mid-week showdown in Columbia, Missouri, against Columbia College on Thursday, March 13th.
