Hawks Rain Down on Panthers in Midweek Sweep

Quincy, Ill. - The Quincy University softball team hosted a midweek doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon (Mar. 19) against Davenport University. The Hawks took game one in six innings 9-1, and finished game two in five 9-0.

Game One
Kaelyn Conger got the start in the circle for game one. The Panthers struggled with her off-speed pitch and went three-up, three-down in inning one, Conger tallying two strikeouts.

Quincy stayed quiet until the second inning when Kenzie Moss got on base after a drop-third strike. Moss stole second and a double to the fence from Allison Kaiser brought her home for the first run of the day.

The bats came around in the third inning as five singles and a double from freshman Casey Fronheiser helped the Hawks add five runs to their side of the scoreboard. Quincy benefited from the left side and sent four hits out to left field to bring in four runs. Alexus Freeman and Mykah Hurley each nabbed their first hits of the game while Moss and Kaiser added another single to their tally in the third.

A first-pitch home run from the Panthers gave Davenport their lone run of the day. Moss responded again in the bottom of the fifth, this time copying the Panthers with a lead-off home run. Quincy's final runs came in the bottom of the sixth inning after Lindsey Fischer led the Hawks off with a single to left. Isabella Shields put the ball in right center, bringing Fischer around. A deep single from Allyson Maynard completed game one with Shields scoring the final run.

Game Two
Quincy stacked the top half of game two with solid defense and an electric offense. Quincy sent the first six batters straight back to the dugout and nabbed eight runs on four hits and five errors. Shields, Kinsey Biggerstaff, and Maynard all got on, setting Moss up for a two-run double to start the scoring ni the first inning. The Panthers' left fielder took care of a fly ball from Hurley, but Maynard was able to head to home plate before the throw came in for a 3-0 lead at the top of the first.

Kaiser led the Hawks off in the second inning with a triple to left center. An error from the first baseman helped Kaiser home and a missed throw from the Panthers brought in Biggerstaff and Shields. Quincy benefited from back-to-back infield errors to tab runs seven and eight, courtesy of knocks from Freeman and Hurley.

Quincy added their final run in the third inning after Kaiser made a dash from second base to home off a ball through the middle from Biggerstaff.

Quincy's defense helped the Hawks to their second shutout of the year. Fisher made two diving catches, one in foul territory and one in the pocket between her and Maynard at first base. Hurley also dealt with a lazered knee-high line drive during the game.

Emma Stieferman led the battery for game two, striking out four and only allowing one hit.

The Hawks return home this weekend with conference doubleheaders against William Jewell and Truman State.
