Westfield, Ind - The Quincy University softball team had a rough go to begin their trip to Indiana on Sunday (Feb. 23) with two losses to the Dragons of Tiffin University. The Hawks lost the lead in a 19-7 defeat, and the Dragons' offensive power dominated in a 10-1 win in game two.
Game One
Tiffin got ahead on a solo home run in the top of the first. The Hawks scored four unanswered runs between the first and second innings.
Kinsey Biggerstaff started the rally off by getting to second on an error. She made it to third on a wild pitch, and
Alexus Freeman took her home with a single to the right side.
The Hawks gained momentum on four hits in the second inning.
Kaidence Dumas started the Hawks with a single to center.
Mykah Hurley sent a double to left that brought Dumas home. Biggerstaff hit her first pitch deep into center and made it all the way to third, bringing home Hurley in the process. One final single from
Allyson Maynard brought Biggerstaff home, giving the Hawks a 4-1 lead going into the third inning.
The Dragons bulked up the third inning with ten runs on seven hits, including a two-run home run. Dumas started the game off in the circle but Freeman retired Dumas early in the third, Quincy tried to get back in the bottom of the inning.
Jessie Martin made it on base with a walk and came in on an
Allison Kaiser single.
The Dragons tallied five more runs in the top of the fourth, taking the Hawks' deficit to 11. Quincy added two runs with a Freeman two-run homer, but couldn't get anymore offense going for the remainder of the game.
Game Two
The Dragons' offense put up two runs in the first three innings, while the Hawks struggled to get on base. The Dragons got further ahead in the fifth inning, putting up four runs on four hits.
Quincy got some movement on the bags in the sixth inning when Kaiser drew four balls and stole second, reaching home plate off an error from the Dragons' shortstop on
Casey Fronheiser's hit. Quincy did not produce much in the final inning,
Senior
Kaelyn Conger got the start in game two, striking out two in the process.
Emma Stieferman came in to help halfway through the bottom of the fifth, also striking out two of ten batters.
The Hawks divided up the hitting among nine players Sunday afternoon with Fronheiser leading the pack with three hits.
The Hawks return tomorrow for a doubleheader against another G-MAC opponent, Thomas More University.
