Sioux Center, Iowa - The Quincy University softball team completed its road trip to northern Iowa with a two-game fight against the Warriors of Winona State University. The Hawks ran around twice in their first game but lost 10-2. The Hawks got shut out in the second game, losing 11-0.
Game One
The Hawks went three up, three down in the first inning and were able to fend off the Warriors in their half inning at the plate with two put outs from
Mykah Hurley at shortstop.
The Warriors got on the board with power, scoring three runs on a wild pitch and an error, leaving the Hawks down three going into the third inning.
Quincy started their field portion of the third inning with two outs and one on base, but things went well in favor of the Warriors after a double and two singles put the Hawks down three more runs. Winona State loaded the bases and a walk helped the last Warrior around for the inning. Quincy's
Kaidence Dumas started in teh circle for the Hawks, but was retired prior to the last out of the third inning,
Alexus Freeman filled in and with the help of Hurley, got out of the inning.
Hurley sent a ball down the left line to start the fourth inning and came around on an
Allyson Maynard double to center field. Quincy left two on base at the end of the half inning. Quincy locked the Warriors down for the bottom of the fourth.
Ryleigh Jones and Freeman got on base to start the fifth. Hurley helped Jones around with a line out RBI, giving the Hawks their final run of the game. Quincy was able to fend off the Warriors in the fifth, despite having the bases loaded. The Warriors rounded out the game with three more runs in the bottom of the 6th inning, leaving the Hawks to a 10-2 deficit in six.
Jersey VanErem came in to pitch for the final out of the game.
Game Two
Emma Stieferman got the start for the Hawks in game two, and with the help of her defense, sent the first three batters back to the dugout. Winona State fired quick in the second inning, scoring 11 runs in the second alone. Freeman came in to relieve Stieferman. The Hawks were shut down for the rest of the game, despite bringing the bats around. The Warriors kept a perfect game for game two, not allowing the Hawks on base.
Freeman was able to get the Hawks out of a jam and struck four batters out in three innings. Quincy's day ended after the fifth inning, losing to the Warriors 11-0.
Hurley led the Hawks with one run, one hit, and one RBI on the day.
The Hawks were excited to head down to Evansville, Indiana for the Blue Bridge Battle, but with projected weather conditions, the tournament has been canceled. The Hawks are looking for some replacement games in the meantime.
