Second Half Turnovers Hamper Hawks at UIndy

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Hawks ended up on the short end of a Thursday night (Jan. 9) GLVC showdown with a red-hot UIndy squad that came into the contest on a five-game heater.

The Greyhounds, aided by 22 Hawk turnovers, spoiled an 18-point double-double from Ethyn Brown along with 19 points on 9-11 shooting from Logan Robbins, defeating QU by an 86-78 final score.

Quincy opened the scoring with a Robbins layup and Max Booher jumper, as the Hawks never trailed for the opening eight and a half minutes before the Greyhounds grabbed their first lead of the contest 15-13 at the 11:13 mark.

UIndy pressed its advantage up to six over the following minutes until a layup from John Kelly III and a Brown three trimmed the deficit to 22-21 with eight and a half to play in the frame, prompting a 16-7 run from Indianapolis to build a 38-28 edge with 4:35 on the clock.

The Hawks responded with a run of their own, pouring in the next 12 points unanswered over three minutes to lead 40-38 with just over a minute left in the half. Back-to-back strikes from deep for the Greyhounds in the final minute found QU trailing 44-40 at the break.

Trailing 52-44 following the first media timeout of the second half, two scores from Robbins, another from Kelly and an El Sieger free throw slimmed the Greyhound advantage to 52-51 as the Hawks hung within a couple of buckets for the coming minutes until an Indianapolis three and layup made it 73-63 at the 7:41 mark.

The UIndy advantage ranged between two and three possessions over the next few minutes as a layup and dunk from Robbins tailed by a Kelly layup brought the Hawks within striking distance at 80-76 with 1:44 remaining.

Another Robbins layup with 40 seconds remaining pulled Quincy within four, once more, at 82-78, but the Hawks drew no closer as a quartet of Greyhound free throws closed out the ballgame.

Robbins 19 marked a season-high for the Liberty, IL native who also added seven rebounds while firing at over 80% from the field. Brown added 18, also a season-high, while dishing out 10 assists for his first double-double as a Hawk to go along with four boards, three threes and a perfect 9-9 at the charity stripe.

Kelly led a Quincy rebounding effort that ended the contest at a +13 margin, pulling down eight boards to go along with 12 points on an efficient 6-7 shooting. Booher was the final Hawk in double figures, putting up 12 points.

QU out-shot the Greyhounds 48.3% to 44.8% in the contest, firing at nearly 56% as a team in the second half to just 36% from UIndy. Despite the Hawks hot shooting, a +10 turnover margin and 29-11 advantage in points off of turnovers for Indianapolis proved to be deciding factors.
