Indianapolis, Ind. - The Quincy University women's basketball team beat the University of Indianapolis on Thursday evening (Jan. 9). The 73-54 victory was the Hawks' first win over the Greyhounds since 2019.
The Hawks had a rocky start to their Thursday night win, having gone 3-14 in the first five minutes of the game. Free throws for
Cymirah Williams helped reset the Hawks and began an 11-point run in the final three minutes of first quarter. Four Hawks aided in the run and only missed one shot in that time, overtaking UIndy 19-15 before the Greyhounds sank a half-court buzzer beater to bring the score within one.
Quincy took over in the second quarter and limited the Greyhounds to a layup and some free throws before the first media timeout. In that time, McDermott had back-to-back baskets and
Mikayla Huffine put in a layup in her first game back this season. The Hawks pulled in 15 rebounds in the second quarter alone with
Taylor Haase securing five in the quarter. Quincy ended the quarter with a six-point lead and a 43 percent shooting average.
The third quarter dragged for both teams. Despite the low-scoring quarter, the Hawks did not let the Greyhounds to get within reach. Haase led the Hawks with a basket and three free throws made.
Quincy's best shooting and best defense came during the fourth quarter and allowed the Hawks to finish with a 19-point lead. The Hawks forced UIndy into eight turnovers and added 11 points to the board after regaining possession.
Karsyn Stratton led the Hawks this quarter with three jumpers that put her in the double digits in scoring.
Quincy had two Hawks with double-doubles in Williams and McDermott, both scoring 12 points and collecting 11 rebounds. Stratton finished with 10 points and nine assists, a career night of assists for the guard as well as the team's highest individual amount this season. The Hawks knocked down the most shots they have all season with McDermott leading the pack on three blocks.
The Hawks look to continue their momentum in conference play with another road game at the University of Illinois Springfield on Saturday afternoon. Quincy will be playing for the Bank of Springfield Rivalry Cup.
