Huffine, Stratton Lead Hawks to Victory

Kirksville, MO - The Quincy University women's basketball team had a stellar performance for their last road contest of the regular season on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 24). The Hawks started and ended the game with scoring surges, pushing past the Truman State Bulldogs 92-89.

The Hawks and Bulldogs battled the first quarter, the scoreboard mostly showing favor to the purple and white. The Hawks regained the lead in the last minute and a half of play with a post shot from sophomore Paige Gamble. Ashlynn Arnsman sent one from downtown to give the Hawks the lead as the time ran out.

Despite a 29-point quarter and the four-point lead the Hawks earned, the Bulldogs were quick to take the reigns of the second quarter, outscoring the Hawks 20-12 and benefiting from points within the paint. The Hawks were just over 30 percent from the field, the lowest they shot all game.

The Hawks found their groove again in the third, sinking five back-to-back shots. Quincy found success on Truman turnovers in the third, scoring over half of its points from Bulldog fumbles. The Hawks also found success in the paint with five different Hawks scoring in the colored lane.

It was the fourth quarter that sealed the deal for the Hawks Saturday afternoon. The Hawks defense kept the Bulldogs to just one basket from three (Bulldogs averaged three a quarter) and forced the Bulldogs into many difficult shots, most of which were not made. The Hawks took the lead for good on a Mikayla Huffine three pointer--one of five she made in the game.

Huffine was the squak on the street for the Hawks Saturday afternoon, scoring a career high 20 points, dishing out nine assists, and securing five rebounds. Huffine went five for six from behind the arc. Karson Stratton was another asset in the Hawks win over the Bulldogs, scoring 19 points and assisting in three other baskets. Cymirah Williams was the only other player in the doubles with 16 points and 8 rebounds.

The Hawks still have a chance for postseason play, which will be determined during their final game next Saturday against the Illinois-Springfield Prairie Stars.
