Rolla, Mo. - The Quincy University women's basketball team finished their road stint on a high with a 25-point victory over the Miners of Missouri S&T Saturday afternoon (Dec. 7). The Hawks had one of their best scoring performances this season with a season-high field goals made in their 85-60 win.
The Hawks started hot going 70 percent from the field in the first quarter. The Hawks went on a run in the first minute of the game, starting with senior
Cymirah Williams's layup off the tip-off.
Karsyn Stratton and
Mariann Blass each had jumpers in the first minutes to push the Hawks' lead to six points before the Miners got into the game. The Hawks dominated in close-range shooting in the first quarter, producing all but eight points in the lane. The Hawks went on three back-to-back-to-back basket runs in the first quarter, and finished the first ten minutes up seven points.
Quincy extended their lead to 11 points in the second quarter despite a dip in their shooting success. Missouri S&T went basket for basket with the Hawks sub the Hawks short burst at the six-minute mark where Blass sank a layup and two free throws.
Quincy broke through their second quarter slump with 24 points in the third quarter. Blass scored a corner three in front of the Hawks' bench to get the quarter started and went three for three from outside the key in the third. Quincy began to separate from the Miners toward the end of the quarter with three straight baskets from Williams,
Nicole McDermott, and
Katrina Stack.
The Hawks saw another burst of success in the final quarter, going 10 for 16 in the field and two for three from the key.
Kealani Neves and
Taya Stevenson sank three-pointers for the Hawks, and
Ashlynn Arnsman pushed the Hawks to a 25-point lead with back-to-back layups, her final off a pass from teammate Neves.
Her three three-pointers in the third quarter helped propel Blass to a season-high 19 points in Saturday's contest. Williams led the Hawks in rebounds (9) and shared the lead for assists (4) with Stratton.
The Hawks take a break from conference play for the holiday season, but are set to play #1 Grand Valley State University at Pepsi Arena on Friday, December 13th at 4 p.m.
