Hawks Drop Tight Match to Millikin

Decatur, Ill. - A depleted Hawks squad made the trip to Millikin on Wednesday (Oct. 9) to take on the Big Blue in the first and final match of the fall season. With only four Hawks in competition, QU claimed three points, coming up just short in a 4-3 loss to a full-strength Big Blue squad.

Inigo Villacampa claimed the first of three Hawk points with a 6-0 6-2 win over Cole Phillips in the 1's match. Gianni Lopez tasted sweet victory in his singles 2's match, going the distance against Clayton Maack to secure a hard-fought 4-6, 7-5 [10-7]. The pairing of Villacampa-Lopez added another win in doubles action, edging out a 7-5 victory in the top doubles match.

Joseph Restrepo got the job done in straight sets in his 3's match, defeating Theo Wolf of MU by a 6-3, 7-5 score, good for the final point of the day for Quincy. Pablo Mateos Niella was the final Hawk in competition, nearly winning the whole match for a four-player QU squad, going the distance in his match against Matthew Kordesh before eventually dropping the match (6-2, 5-7, [4-10]). The pairing of Restrepo-Mateos Niella fell in their doubles match by a 3-6 score.

The final doubles match went in favor of the Big Blue due to a lack of participants from the Hawks, giving MU the doubles point as well as both the 5's and 6's matches in singles play due to the same circumstances to hand QU a 4-3 defeat.

Next Up

The Hawks have a long break ahead of them, waiting nearly five whole months before seeing action again in February. QU kicks off the spring campaign against Maryville on Saturday (Feb. 8) at home in Quincy with the match time designated as TBA at this time.
