QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University men's basketball team looked to continue its solid run of form as of late, coming away winners in four of the last five contests leading up to the Thursday (Jan. 11) GLVC showdown with Truman State University.
Zion Richardson and
Mason Wujek were the driving force in a narrow victory for the Hawks over the Bulldogs. 24 points and 11 rebounds from Richardson along with 18 tallies and 11 boards for Wujek lifted Quincy to a 75-73 winner to move to 7-1 in Pepsi Arena and 4-3 in conference play.Â
QU fell behind in the early stages of the game as it looked as though TSU might be threatening to take control of the contest as Truman used a barrage of three-pointers and inconsistent play from Quincy to jump ahead 17-5 at the 13:44 mark.Â
The Hawks chopped the lead down to three a little over three minutes later, but continued to play from behind until an 13-0 run from QU in the final four and half minutes of the half turned an eight-point deficit to a five-point lead at the half.Â
Truman State threatened throughout the early stages of the second half but never drew closer than two points. Later in the period, a double digit advantage for Quincy was erased over a five-minute span, giving the Bulldogs a 62-59 advantage on a three-pointer followed immediately by two free throws for an off-ball foul at the 5:48 mark providing a five-point swing in a single possession.Â
A layup from Wujek followed by three points the old fashioned way from
Nate Shockey put the Hawks ahead 64-62. Quincy never surrendered the lead again for the final 4:54 of the game, bending but never breaking to hold on to a 75-73 victory.Â
The QU brand of aggressive play on the boards was on full display as the GLVC's second leading team in rebounds per game wrecked havoc on the Bulldogs, winning the rebounding battle 43-26. Over half of the Hawks boards fell into the hands of Richardson and Wujek, collecting 22 between the two of them.Â
Richardson continued his elite form as the Frisco, TX native notched back-to-back double-doubles for his third in the last four contests, two of which also featured 20+ point scoring outbursts.Â
With the strong performance Wujek checked off his second double-double of the season, the first an 11 point 10 rebound effort against Missouri-St. Louis on 12/7.Â
Next up for the Hawks is a Saturday afternoon (Jan. 13) GLVC showdown with the high-powered offense of Upper Iowa University. QU comes into the contest allowing the third fewest points per game (67.5) in the league while the Peacocks lead the conference in scoring per game (89.8). Tip-off is slated forÂ
3:00 PM from Pepsi Arena.Â
