Hawks Use Big Second Half to Defeat Saints

TOWN AND COUNTRY, Mo. - Fresh off a conference-opening loss to Missouri S&T the Hawks looked to salvage a split for the weekend in a 3:00 PM contest at Maryville on Saturday (Dec. 2). Quincy trailed by seven at the half but used a big second frame to come away with a 71-66 victory over the Saints to open conference play at 1-1.

Zion Richardson added three of his season-high 23 as the first points of the contest to put the Hawks ahead early. Maryville led for the remainder of the first half as Quincy trailed within a possession or two for the final 17 minutes of the first half, giving Maryville a 32-25 advantage heading to the locker room.

QU regained the lead for the first time since the first basket of the game at the 12:23 mark of the second half on a jumper from Isaiah Foster. Maryville pressed the lead back to seven at 53-46 with 8:21 left just for the Hawks knot the score once more 57-57 and even take a 59-57 lead into the final media timeout.

The tally was deadlocked at 62-62 with just over a minute remaining until the Hawks went on a 9-4 run to close out the victory.

Quincy shot 41% (24-58) from the field as a team with 15 of the buckets coming in a second half that saw the Hawks shoot 55% as a unit while holding their opponents to 37% in the second frame.

Three other QU players joined Richardson in double figures with Foster scoring 15, Nate Shockey with 11 and Mason Wujek with 10. In addition, Shockey led the way in the rebounding category for the Hawks with seven, followed by Richardson and Wujek with six.

Next up for Quincy is a date with the Tritons of Missouri-St. Louis on Thursday evening (Dec. 7) at Pepsi Arena. Tip-off for the GLVC showdown is slated for 7:30 PM.
