QUINCY, Ill. - The Hawks welcomed the Eagles of Judson University to Pepsi Arena for a Saturday (Nov. 25) afternoon battle of the birds. QU didn't have it's best shooting performance, but utilized a strong defensive presence and large advantage in the rebounding margin for a comfortable 64-45 victory.
Judson scored the first points of the contest before a layup from
Mason Wujek and a three-pointer from
Isaiah Foster put QU ahead 5-3 and gave the Hawks a lead they would never relinquish.
Quincy spread minutes around to 12 different players with nine of them eclipsing double digit minutes in the contest. All 12 Hawks that saw minutes found their way into the scoring column, led in double figures by
Orlando Thomas with 13 and
John Kelly III with 10.
Two assists and a bucket from Kelly, along with a put-back score for
Todd Bieg sent QU to the locker room with an 11 point lead at the half.
Two hits from behind the arc by Thomas and another from Kelly gave Quincy it's largest lead of the contest at 60-37 with 4:41 to play. The Hawks closed out a 64-45 winner on a jumper from
Anthony Coby to end the scoring.
For the second time in just six games on the young season, the QU defense held it's opponent to under 50 points, wreaking havoc on the Eagles shooting efforts, limiting them to 28% (16-57) from the field and 20% (3-15) from deep.
Thanks to a 54-37 advantage in the rebound margin, the Hawks were able to convert 18 second chance points on 18 offensive rebounds, proving to be a real difference-maker in the game.
Jamil Wilson spearheaded the effort, grabbing eight boards in just 12 minutes.
Next up is a trip down to Rolla, MO for a Thursday (Nov. 30) contest to open conference play for the Hawks. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 PM.
