KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - The Quincy University men's basketball team made the short trek west to Truman State to begin its season at the GLVC-GMAC Crossover, facing off against the Yellowjackets of Cedarville University.
The Hawks never trailed in the first half, taking a five-point lead into the locker room, but couldn't contain the Yellowjackets in the second frame of the seasons first contest, dropping the game 83-69.Â
Quincy scored the first two baskets of the contest on layups from
Mason Wujek and
Ibrahim Drame to lead it 4-0 in the early stages of the first half. CU worked it back to a tie at 5-5, prompting an eight-point run from the Hawks to open a 13-5 advantage at the 14:25 mark. Threes from
Isaiah Foster and
Zion Richardson along with another two from Foster on a jumper in the paint fueled the run.Â
QU continued to push the issue, pressing the advantage to double digits at 19-8 on two threes from
Nate Shockey. Cedarville cut the advantage to a single possession on a few occasions, including in the final minute at 34-32, forcing the hand of Richardson from long range to put the Hawks on top 37-32 heading into halftime.Â
The Jackets put the first points on the board in the second half, finding the bottom of the net at the 18:33 mark to make it 37-34. Richardson converted a layup to replenish the lead, before three straight buckets gave CU its first lead of the contest at 41-39.Â
The Hawks hung around until the midpoint of the second frame, staying within a possession until Cedarville started to heat up heading down the stretch.
Quincy was unable to weather the storm and mount a comeback, as cold shooting in the final 20 minutes plagued the Hawks, going 0-9 from deep and shooting 25% lower than the first half in an 83-69 defeat at the hands of the Yellowjackets.Â
Next up for the Hawks is a showdown with the Oilers of University of Findlay, tomorrow (Nov. 11), for day two of the GLVC-GMAC Crossover, hosted by Truman State. Tip-off from Kirksville is slated for 12:15 PM.Â
