The Quincy University women's basketball team triumphed 60-53 over Rockhurst University in a GLVC matchup at Pepsi Arena on Thursday (February 17) evening.
The first quarter was rough for QU, falling behind early and not being able to recover before the end of it. Emma Knipe scored the first points of the game for QU, hitting a layup with 8:49 remaining on the clock to make the score 3-2 Rockhurst. The final QU points of the quarter came with thirty seconds remaining, with Beth Matas Martin sinking a jumper to make it 15-11 Rockhurst, which was still the score when the buzzer sounded.
The second quarter was when QU started to shine. Maddie Spagnola went on a tear, making a three-pointer four seconds into play and later sinking two free throws to give QU their first lead of the game at 16-15, with 7:46 remaining. After some back-and-forth, Spagnola sunk another three-pointer to retake the lead at 26-24 with one minute remaining, and QU was able to keep it for the rest of play, with the game going to halftime with QU leading 28-26.
QU continued to shine during the third quarter, keeping the lead throughout. Sarah Nelson scored their first points of the half with a jumper twenty-three seconds in, and their final points of the quarter coming on a Maddie Spagnola free throw with 3:05 remaining. When the quarter ended, QU led 39-32.
QU struggled at the top of the final quarter, only scoring their first points with eight minutes remaining on a Nelson layup. After that, they were off to the races, still refusing to relinquish the lead. Two free throws from Martin with nineteen seconds remaining ended the game offensively for QU and secured the victory.
Maddie Spagnola led QU with 20 points and 12 rebounds (all defensive) in 39 minutes of play. Beth Matas Martin scored 12 points in 29 minutes of play, and Sarah Nelson scored 12 points in 24 minutes of play.
