PREVIEW: Hawks Hit the Road to Battle Bearcats

Earlier this week, senior offensive tackle BJ Wilson officially accepted an invite the East – West Shrine Bowl. Wilson is the first player in program history to accept an invite to this bowl game. The game will be played at the Las Vegas Raiders stadium on Thursday, February 2, 2023.
 
Record Book Watch
Quarterback Tionne Harris is the middle of cementing himself in the football record book for a while. His career passing yards of 5,891 currently sit 2nd all-time. He has completed 441 passes, which sits in 5th, but he is just 7 completions away from moving into 4th. The St. Louis, Missouri native has thrown for 52 touchdowns and sit just 10 shy of becoming all-time leader.
 
For Harris's single season numbers, he has thrown for 2,667 yards and just 34 yards shy of 2nd in a single season. He has completed 192 passes this fall and is two shy of moving into 3rd for single season completions. For his 22 touchdowns, that currently sits 3rd in a season, and is one shy of moving into 2nd, but is also four shy of breaking the single season record.
 
On the defensive side of the ball, linebacker Peyten Chappel is closing in on school records of his own. He currently sits in second all-time at 368 total tackles, with 218 of those being solo, while the other 150 have been assisted. Cody Leonard (2015-18) holds the all-time record with 376 total tackles, along with the most solo tackles at 223.
 
Chappel has also intercepted nine passes in his Hawk career, which is fourth most in program history. Murphy Grant (1992-96) currently sits in 3rd with 12 interceptions.
 
The Mount Zion, Illinois native currently sits tied for 5th in single season solo tackles with 63. Ray Lock sits in 3rd place with 70, which he accomplished during the 1993 season.
 
Scouting the Hawks
Quincy enters week 10 with an overall record of 4-5 (1-3 GLVC) and losers of their last two games. Last week, they fell to the Truman State Bulldogs by the score of 59-32. It was a five point game at the half, but the Bulldogs scored 21 unanswered points in a five minute span to start the 2nd half.
 
Harris was 28 of 38 for 320 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions. Jalen Lawrence was his top target with nine catches for 149 yards and two touchdowns. Tremayne Lee carried the ball 18 times for 42 yards.
 
Scouting the Bearcats
Southwest Baptist enters this week with an overall record of 4-5 (2-2 GLVC). They are coming off of a win against the McKendree University Bearcats on the road by the score of 49-31. GLVC Offensive player of the week Abel Carter carried the ball 24 times for 243 yards and three scores. SBU total over 600 yards of offense.
 
Quarterback Cooper Callis was 16 of 23 for 266 yards and three touchdowns of his own. GLVC Special Teams player of the week Kylan Herrera returned five kicks for 127 yards.
